I remember a very early (first?) episode of Star Trek, where it was Capt. Pike instead of Capt. Kirk. The story was about the crew being abducted by aliens who kept them imprisoned, but the prison was made to give the illusion of a paradise. The "moral" of the story was that humans hate not being in control, even if it means giving up paradise.

That was, in fact, a hateful jab at Genesis (Isaac Asimov was a Christophobic). Man was created to live in a paradise, but there was still God over him. Adam rebelled and got kicked out. Ever since then, man has raged against God, not for kicking him out of paradise, but simply for being God. They knowingly prefer hell to bowing before God, and an eternity of suffering over love and happiness under God's authority. Man wants to be God and can't, hence the rage.
