Yesterday night I did more research on how to eat healthy after this fast and almost blew my poor little mind! I finally had to push myself away from the computer at midnight.  My eyes & head hurt from the information and the glaring computer screen. There is so much conflicting information out there: Low Calorie, Low Fat, Low Carb, High Carb, Vegan, Vegetarian, Flexertarian, Mediterranean, etc. Ha! And they all have some doctor somewhere that back this information up with tons of medical jargon I was trying to sort through and make sense of.

I kept coming back to Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s, Eat to Live book. He has completed several books, including a book on fasting for health. The Eat to Live book is primarily pushing a Vegan lifestyle. I know I could never fully commit to that.  Although, I have no problem cutting back on my meat and dairy consumption (good for the heart). However, I love cheese – I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t like. Also, I’m a country girl. I was president of my 4-H club. I raised rabbits, sheep, chickens and ducks. Our rabbits, chickens and ducks were our pets but the sheep we sold to Food 4 Less. After you’ve raised sheep you quickly realize how easy it is not to get attached to them. They are almost as dumb as turkeys. Do you know that turkeys are so dumb that they will lift their heads up when it rains and drown themselves!?!   Pigs I could easily get attached to. They have amazing intelligence and great personalities. Okay…I’m totally off my subject now.

Anyway, Dr. Fuhrman’s plan sounds like a great way to break my fast. I believe I could also keep eating that way for the rest of my life with a few modifications (olive oil, some lowfat cheese, and some fish & chicken). I know if I cut dairy out all together I would be healthier person. A co-worker of mine looked at my menu about 6 years ago when I was very “healthy” and suffered from horrible allergies and could not lose the last few pounds I wanted to.  My diet was whole grains, lots of veggies and fruits, some cheese, nonfat milk and an occasional frozen yogurt. He told me to cut out all dairy and my allergies would disappear. He also said I need more fat, just a bit olive oil to cook with and on my salads, some advocado and nuts in moderation and I would lose the rest of the weight. He was right! My allergies went away in three weeks and the last 5 pounds disappeared in a couple months.  But I just couldn’t give up all my dairy for long.

I’m looking forward to Lilly’s post fast menu so we can both hopefully share with each what works. AND I’m sure we’ll also find out what does not work!  It’s a journey and I’m okay with making mistakes, just as long as I learn from them.  I’m excited and scared about eating again. Mostly excited right now though.

I hope everyone is having a beautiful day whether you’re fasting, eating right or made a mistake last night and are starting over today.

      Hi Katie
I had to stop my fast because I started to loose more hair than normal. This happened after my last fast, too. It didn't happen after my first long fast about 1/2 a year ago. So I figured I was pushing it to far. Anyway, this means we can start a good diet together. I'll keep posting what works. Today I had a dinner of some beans, cucumber, cilantro salad with seaweed, onion and olive oil apple cider vinegar. Just a small bowl. I try to chew for long and eat it slow. I'll let you know how my bowels take it after the fast.
      Love

I'm excited that you'll be posting your post fast blogs before me and then I'll be right behind you. I'm really looking forward to eating again. Although, your menu of egg yolks didn't tempt me much tonight. ;) The beans sounded good though. Gosh, I hope your hair comes back quickly.

    • Great Job   by  vegeymom     17 y     1,729
I've been watching your progress and am so happy for you! You've really done a great job and are reaching the goal. What a feeling you must have inside. I have stayed with the Joel Furhman diet since breaking my fast. I plan to continue that way. I gained 5 or 6 pounds back after starting to eat again, but today (exactly one week from breaking my fast) I am back to my end fast weight. Next week I will be breaking new territory with weight challenges. I only eat 2 meals a day (which I will continue doing for good.) I eat a healthy breakfast no snack and a healthy lunch/dinner. No dairy, no sugar, no meat (I am a vegetarian though) no white flour, no oils. It has been very easy to transition back to eating. I broke my fast with brown basmati rice and chinese stir fry. I did have a "goodie" this week. It was a few bites of chocolate chocolate cake and some ice cream. It tasted great and wasn't in my home so once it was eaten the tempation to have more was gone, because it wasn't where I live. That's another new rule of mine. Don't bring the junk home. I haven't been and won't. Overall the fasting has made me a stronger person. I am in control. My workouts have been tremendous! Eating to Live is my new motto and it makes all the difference. I think of your journey often and will follow up with you later. Sincerely, vegeymom

Wonderful! I'm so glad you're using the same plan I intend on using and have maintained the weight loss - even with the treat (that's a good idea for junk food)! I plan on following Fuhrman to the letter (no meat or dairy) for at least the first few weeks to maintain my weight loss. I'm petrified about putting the weight back on. This has been hard work and I still have plenty more to lose. Really good to hear from you vegeymom!
