German MEP Christine Anderson: Unlike many Western Europeans, Eastern Europeans are waking up in huge numbers "because they still remember what it was like to be in a dictatorship".

"They recognise the mechanisms, they see the signs... they still know what it felt like to have no rights, to be controlled by the state police... and they recognise the same is happening over again."

"But in the Western democracies, we're spoiled brats, basically... We no longer remember that it had to be fought for. It had to be wrestled from the elites, and our fathers and forefathers spilled their blood over it so we can live and enjoy freedom, democracy, and the rule of law."

"It is so precious, and we have to do everything to uphold and defend it."

"Don't trust the government. Be alert, question it... let them know what you will and will not tolerate... let them know that... their job is to represent you, and make clear to them that you are their boss."

"And any elected representative not willing to do what the people want can no longer count on getting re-elected."
