City Council, community organizations and residents celebrate the growth of urban food production in San Diego

Community gardens improve the environment, make neighborhoods safer, strengthen community health, and feed hungry people. Join us in publicizing the benefits of community farms and gardens and encourage community involvement in growing a greener San Diego!

What: Press Conference to announce "Community Farms and Gardens Day" and the presentation of a City Council Resolution in support of more farms and gardens in San Diego

When: Monday, June 25th, 10-10:30am

Where: The intersection of 54th and Chollas Parkway (the proposed site for a 1.5-acre community farm being developed through public-private partnership between the City of San Diego and the International Rescue Committee).

About the Event:
Cities across the United States continue to recognize the benefits of urban agriculture. Philadelphia is home to 500 community gardens. Boston boasts 175. Chicago has pledged to build 1,000 over the next 10 years. Meanwhile, San Diego has a lot of space to grow with only six community gardens within its city limits—and all of them have lengthy waiting lists.

Thankfully, our city is taking an important step to increase community access to urban farms and gardens. Driven by the leadership of Councilpersons Donna Frye and Jim Madaffer, the City is passing a resolution on Tuesday, June 26th that recognizes the importance of community farms and gardens and further expresses its commitment to building more of them.

A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SAN DIEGO RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF
COMMUNITY FARMS AND GARDENS

WHEREAS, San Diego has a rich agricultural history that should be celebrated and continued; and

WHEREAS, there are in excess of 39,000 acres of developed and undeveloped open space in San Diego that could potentially house community farms & gardens; and

WHEREAS, community farms and gardens are a resourceful alternative to under-used lands and contribute to the vitality of our neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, community farms and gardens are green spaces that improve the environment by decreasing urban runoff and reducing the heat island effect; and

WHEREAS, obesity rates and diet related diseases continue to rise and efforts are being put forth to encourage the eating of healthy foods such as those produced by community farms and gardens; and

WHEREAS, community farms and gardens act as living classrooms for students and the public; and

WHEREAS, many of our neighborhoods are park-deficient, and community gardens provide active recreational opportunities for all ages; and

WHEREAS, community farms and gardens benefit San Diego's diverse population by providing culturally-desirable, fresh, nutritious produce to residents of all socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, and
ages; and

WHEREAS, there is a need for a standardized and accessible process for citizens to navigate in order to initiate community farms and gardens; and

WHEREAS, a collaborative of concerned and informed individuals and community organizations throughout San Diego have joined together to bring attention to the desire of residents to have community farms and gardens; and

WHEREAS, the City Planning and Community Investment Department of the City of San Diego has agreed to insert the words "community farms and gardens" into the General Plan of the City of San Diego (see letter attached hereto as Exhibit A), NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of San Diego, that this Council does hereby recognize the importance of community farms and gardens; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Council supports and encourages the creation and continued existence of community farms and gardens.
