MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE
There is the day when we celebrate Memorial Day.
There greatest contribution we can make
to those who have lost their life in War
is to dedicate ourselves to Peace.
Of this I feel assured.
I share with you a Vision for Peace:
It is an Enchanted Garden Vision,
an understanding that as we make peace
with within our own backyard,
the place where we live,
we have peace with our neighbors.
I want to see gardens.
I want to see a generation of kids
who have intimate knowledge with Apple Trees,
who know as much about uploading good soil
into plants as they know about uploading information
into computers.
This is an age that asks cooperation,
that asks interdependence.
Take my friends Joe Rodriguez, Jr.
and Barry Logan, two of our local San Diego
organic farmers.
Take Noel Stehly, who is contributing
valencia oranges and his star ruby locally grown
grapefruit for our upcoming World Environment Day
in Tecate, this Saturday, June 2-noon to 7 PM.
Joe Rodriquez is also known as Joe the Farmer,
whose life is featured in the fictional storybook of
kids called "The Comeback of Joe the Farmer."
I wrote a "A Love Letter to Joe the Farmer" years ago,
but when it became the centerpiece for a campaign to
help Joe rise up out of years of Troubling Times as a Family Farmer
in San Diego, Barry Logan was the first to sign that Love Letter.
When it was time to put together our San Diego Earthfair Exhibit,
it was Barry who first stepped forward to ensure expenses would be made.
There is no competition between farmers,
not local organic farmers, not the farmers in San Diego County.
We have too many mouths to feed,
and in the days ahead---we need to ensure True
Homeland Security in our Bioregion by making sure we have
enough Real Food.
When I say Bioregion--I am including our Good Neighbors to the South,
the people of the Tecate-Tijuana Region.
No walls, no borders can ensure food safety between us.
No laws in Washington D.C. that aim to get our people apart
can disregard the reality that we are breathing the same air
and influenced by the saw sewage spills.
We are living together in the same growing area.
We both have mouths to feed and children to teach.
Joe and Barry, Noel, and people who work at Whole Foods Market-
farmers who work the Hillcrest Farmers' Market, we all know
we are in this Life Together. We know we are called now
to work together to ensure that kids have gardens, and
know that supporting locally grown organic food in our
Bioregion will ensure true Food Security in the years to come.
