When you are expecting a baby, there are going to be a lot of items on your to-do list. You will want to be financially prepared, have a future plan for child care and education, and also learn how to best take care of your new baby. Along those lines, will be for you to make your home safe for your brand new family member. Some of the little things you may have never considered could be the most dangerous for a baby. Below you will find some tips on how to baby-proof your home.

Heavy Objects

As your baby will crawl around and start learning how to walk, they will pull on things to hold them steady. This is inevitable. Your baby will soon be holding on to furniture such as sofas, tables, dressers, and bookcases to stand and see things taller than them. Because your little one is bound to be curious about every little thing in your home, you will want to look into fastening heavy objects to the walls.

Also, take into consideration the decor and valuable items that can fall on their head, fall to the floor and break, or spillover. One hard pull and your entire bookshelves and chests of drawers could come tumbling down on your baby. You should invest in a multi position ladder to get these tasks done. This may be time-consuming but it will be worth it.

Electric Safety

Electricity is an area where you will need to take strong precautions. Think about how many appliances and things you have plugged into electrical outlets. After your baby turns 1 year old, they will start being very aware and interested in all of their surroundings. They will be trying to discover how things work, and along with this comes an interest in chords and electrical outlets.

Take the time to cover all electrical outlets with tight-fitting covers. These are relatively inexpensive and can offer you peace of mind that is invaluable. You should also look into tying up loose chords so that they are not easily accessible by tiny fingers. You can look into hiding chords from your tv and other appliances inside of the walls for safekeeping.

Stair Gates

Your baby will notice you and your family members using the stairs. It is only a matter of time until they also want to start taking the stairs. They want to imitate you and they will also want to be independent. However, your infant should only try taking the stairs with your supervision.

When you are having family time, it is imperative that you put up gates around the stairs. This will show your baby that the stairs are off-limits at that time and will also prevent unwanted accidents. These gates can come in different sizes and heights and can also be used to close off closets and doorways.

Cleaning Products

The accidental ingestion of chemicals around the household is a very common incident among babies. You may be thinking that your cleaning products smell gross, so why would anyone want to put that in their mouth? But the reality is that your baby has not developed the common sense that you have. Every little thing is new to them which makes it all more enticing.

For this reason, you will need to install locks on all of your cabinets and return your cleaning products to a safe place when you are finished using them. The most common items that babies will try to ingest are dishwasher and laundry tablets. Smaller items are more appealing to little babies. Walk around every room in your house and take inventory.
