Sleeping on a trip, especially a long one, can be extremely difficult. If this is something you're currently struggling with, here are four tips for sleeping better while traveling.

1. Use a Supplement

If you're having a lot of trouble sleeping, few solutions will be more effective than using a supplement. There are several different sleeping solutions to choose from. One option to try is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that bodies produce in the evening. It relaxes us and tells the brain to start sleeping. Unfortunately, the production of this hormone can get tricky, especially during long trips. So, melatonin is a great hormone to take while traveling. Another option to try is magnesium. Magnesium is a sleeping solution that has a multitude of uses, including keeping the heart and brain healthy. It's also useful for sleep. Magnesium can calm your mind, allowing your brain to induce sleep faster. Finally, you might want to try lavender. This is a sleep aid that doesn't need to be swallowed. Instead, lavender can be ingested through aromatherapy. The smell of lavender is said to increase sleep exponentially, as well as decrease the possibility of waking up in the middle of the night. If this sounds promising to you, look for a portable diffuser to pack in your suitcase.

2. Read Before Bed

Trips, for the most part, involve a lot of stimulation. Even when traveling alone, you're likely to have several interactions throughout the day. Unfortunately, the stimulation from these interactions may be making it hard to sleep. So, it's best to isolate yourself from others and quiet your thoughts. A great way to do this is by reading. Sure, it's tempting to watch something, especially if you've been working all day, but this will probably only keep you awake. Looking at a screen can make it difficult to calm down. On the other hand, reading a book (as long as it isn't an e-book) allows your eyes to rest. It can also take your mind off any stress you're dealing with. When reading, be sure to find a comfortable spot away from others. If it isn't possible to read alone, try putting earbuds in to block out any noise. It's also important to choose the right book. Don't pick up an exciting novel with a lot of action. While you should enjoy the book, it shouldn't be too investing.

3. Drink Something Soothing

Sometimes, the best thing you can do before bed is to have a soothing drink. Find a quiet place, get comfy and have a relaxing beverage. There's a lot of options to try when it comes to evening drinks. If you're in the mood, you might want to make a cocktail. Wine and bourbon are especially great for relaxation. Try having a hot toddy, mulled wine or an old fashioned. If you're looking for something non-alcoholic, there's a variety of fun options to try. You really can't go wrong with some warmed milk. Consider adding honey to sweeten it up. Also, tea is an excellent option. Many types of tea are specifically made to enhance sleep. Lavender and chamomile are particularly effective flavors for inducing relaxation. In general, warm drinks are often the most relaxing, especially if you're in a cold area.

4. Listen To Something

While this may seem counterproductive, listening to something while going to sleep can be highly effective. One reason for this is calming your thoughts. If you've had a chaotic trip, you've probably been thinking about multiple things at once. It may be hard to lie in bed and quiet your mind. If you listen to something at a low volume, you can distract your mind long enough to fall asleep. A great option for this is audiobooks, especially if you're an avid reader. You could also try playing a podcast. Just be sure that the production isn't too noisy or exciting. If you're worried about losing your place, you can rest easy. Many audio-productions have a sleep timer that stops the recording after a set amount of time.

When you're on a trip, it's extremely important to get sufficient sleep. So, try these tips and enjoy being fully rested.
