Even a job that you enjoy can be difficult sometimes. All sorts of careers have challenges to overcome, and while facing those challenges can sometimes be stimulating and invigorating, it can also cause worry and stress.

It can be difficult to leave the stress at the office rather than carrying it home with you to bother you there. However, constant stress can contribute to health problems and interfere with your relationships with others. Here are some ways you can relax and let go of your work stress when you come home for the day.

1. Go Out With Friends

Getting together with people you like to do something you enjoy can be a great way to take your mind off your problems at work. Many people go to bars and drink, but there are other things you can do, such as see a movie, listen to live music, or go bowling. Chances are that your friends also have stressful jobs and are in need of something to distract them. They are likely to appreciate it if you take on the role of a leader and organize something fun to do as a group.

2. Do Some Exercise

Doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day helps promote weight loss and increase cardiovascular health. Exercise also releases endorphins, brain chemicals that improve your mood. Choose an activity that you enjoy so that you have something to look forward to after work. You can stop at the gym after work to play a game of racquetball or swim in the pool, or you can do yoga at home or take a walk around your neighborhood.

3. Read a Book

Reading a book allows you to escape into a completely different world for a few hours at a time. To make the escape complete, turn off your phone completely while you are reading and avoid the distractions of other electronics, with the possible exception of your e-reader. Reading books gives you new perspectives and insights on life and is a great form of entertainment as well.

4. Take a Bath

Soaking in warm water helps you relax by relieving tension in your muscles. You don't have to take a long bath; as little as five minutes can work wonders. While warm water is soothing enough on its own, you can enhance the relaxation by lighting scented candles or adding essential oils or aromatherapy salts to the bathwater. Certain scents have been shown to increase relaxation as well.

5. Spend Time With a Pet

At the end of a long day, your dog or cat is probably overjoyed to see you. Cuddling or playing with your pet, perhaps doing some light grooming, is a great way to relax and bond with a furry friend. It may make you feel better to talk about what is stressing you out at work to your pets; they don't judge, and they can't gossip about what you tell them behind your back. On the other hand, maybe you want to put the work stress in the back of your mind and concentrate on the furry snuggles.

6. Meditate

Meditation is a way of clearing your mind and existing in the present moment by concentrating on your breath. This has been shown to promote relaxation and reduce stress. It is a simple thing, but it is not always easy for people who are used to having their minds going nonstop at all times. If you are getting started with meditation and feel you need help, there are guided meditation programs and classes you can take.

When you have a problem at work, it can be tempting to sit and think about it until you reach a solution. However, studies show that taking some time away from problems and thinking about something else can help you to come up with a solution. When you come back to thinking about the problem, you have a fresh perspective on it.
