Growing Old by Karlin .....

Getting old is often painful, but we do get to die in the end.

"Nobody said growing old was fun" is a sentiment I hear from people approaching the time when we must start the application for the old age pension. To say so is a way of accepting the necessary decline in function and the increase of bodily insults.

Hernias happen as tissues weaken. Old injuries can awaken. Eyes and ears weaken. The nose produces prodigious amounts of snot from the least of irritations, Teeth fall from the mouth, replaced by dentures that some people such as myself are so utterly happy with after a 25 year battle with dental pains - but we talk funny and our face changes.

But LISTEN UP!! It is entirely possible to hold off the decline for many many years - I always envisioned myself as that old guy backpacking through the Rocky Mountains at age 85.

Eventually, life prepares us for dying. I think the decline is part of that. We might want a sudden drop into death from a healthy state, but it is our connection to real life, evolution and the necessity of dying to make room for the next generations... but it is much more than that!!

The continuous existence of the human species is only possible because we pass on our DNA and it can adapt even as it reproduces. The DNA wants to survive - we are preprogrammed to crave sex so the DNA is passed on, on instructions from the DNA itself.

Dying might be thought of as a DNA tactic - we are conscious beings, so we understand that if we ALL die of old age or whatever, without passing on our DNA sexually, that the human race will die out completely. Maybe that is why we cherish our grandchildren so much.

But in the harsh reality of Life on Earth, it is mostly that no species of life has the proper programming to not simply wear out. Something about telermones getting shorter each time a cell replicates. Bugs get into the programming, it cannot go on forever.

I hope people don't still fear death. The days of heaven and hell are surely past us. We might be far better off with the truth if the truth is like the NDE people say - a nice floatly place of love is what awaits us after death. Maybe that is just a staging area until our judgement is given.

Meanwhile, I just need a place to complain, but not on Cure Zone. I think I will phone my sons and see how the grandkids are doing [as an excuse for phoning, but really I just want to complain, lol].
