Dentists are scary. There, I said it.

It’s the way I and almost everyone else on the planet feel when it comes to the average tooth doctor. In fact, 1 in 4 of us has a very real fear when it comes to dental treatment. Fear of the dentist is a diagnosable issue and, as such, there are plenty of different treatments available in order to help deal with it.

However, it is important to know that being afraid of the dentist often means different things to different people. It could be the fear of treatment hurting, or the sounds and smells of the surgery may bring back the memories of bad experiences from childhood. The why of dental fear isn’t really what matters in most cases, but the repercussions of this fear certainly do.

More common causes of dental fear include the following: embarrassment over their teeth, loss of control, fear of pain, sounds, fear of needles, worried about gagging or choking, being scared of experiencing something traumatic and even the fear that the experience will cause a panic attack.

Not visiting your dentist Warrington regularly enough can mean very bad things for your teeth and oral hygiene.

Is there a cure for dental phobia?

Most people would say that in order to come over your fears you must first face them. However, achieving this is difficult when the fear is overwhelming and a cause of major trauma in most cases. And when faced with going to the dentist and facing your fear, you will often choose to simply stay at home instead. A simple choice, but often quite damaging in the long term if made over and over again.

In such cases, it may be ideal to seek some form of ‘alternative’ treatment. Such treatments offer various levels of success rates and claims that they ‘cure’ people entirely. Which makes sifting through all of these claims and finding the truth somewhat difficult at first. However, there are a few such alternative treatments which do have a good level of proof backing up their claims of helping people with dental phobia.

Relaxation techniques are the most cited as helping people deal with dental phobia whilst in the dentist’s chair. This often requires talking through your fears with your dental practitioner prior to the treatment. From there, they can prescribe or help you run through a number of helpful relaxation techniques which can help to calm you down during a procedure. Keeping your breathing under control and heart rate relaxed is the biggest aim of these exercises as if these factors elevate we can begin to panic and our fight/flight instincts naturally take over.

At the end of the day, there is no saying what techniques will work best for you. Some people even claim acupuncture is the only way they ever ‘cured’ their dental phobia! Try enough techniques and eventually you should be able to find one that helps to reduce your symptoms and makes being at the dentist a much less emotionally taxing ordeal.

It can also help you overcome new things and maybe even lead to bigger procedures. Such as dermal fillers cheshire and botox cheshire.
