Many months ago, one of the squirrels that inhabited my back yard died. I found her body lying on the patio concrete. She was buried with ceremony in my back yard, a heavy piece of plywood with bricks on top was placed over her grave so that my dog wouldn't dig her up. A few weeks ago, thinking that enough time had passed so that Squirrel had returned to the Earth, I removed the bricks, but left the plywood on the soil. Today, lifting up the plywood that had been lying "face down" for months on the soil, I was so excited to find that Gaia had made a piece of art work! Some of the top layer of plywood had peeled away, revealing the layers of wood underneath. The pattern of the peeled layer was so interesting and beautiful to me. I hosed off most of the soil and put the plywood creation in the sun to dry. My thoughts were that I would clean off the plywood some more, put a few layers of wood varnish on it, put a hanger on the back of it, and call it "Gaia Creation". How appropriate that the plywood, made out of tree wood and glued together in layers, would be reclaimed by Gaia and become Her work of art!

Then I looked more closely at the drying plywood. The heat of the sun on the wood caused little pale termites to emerge from under the layers of peeling plywood. Ah, that's how Gaia did it! Her little creepy-crawlies were the master craftsmen. Well, of course this changed things considerably. Not wanting to kill the little creatures, I placed the "art work" in the shade of the trees, leaning up against the back yard fence. If the plywood was left standing with the peeling layer exposed to sun and weather, the termites might eventually leave their home and return to the soil, and then I could have the "art". Or, I could place the plywood "face down" back onto the soil and leave the termites alone. I asked Gaia what She wanted me to do; She said it was up to me. After a bit of contemplation during which I struggled with the part of myself that wanted to claim possession of the "artwork", I sighed and laid the plywood "face down" onto the soil. I plan on lifting the plywood up every now and then to look at it, and see what the little craftsmen have done further with "Gaia Creation".
