I brought this @rateseed Morrocan squash to the
#SDFOODSYS Food Waste Solution Summit. October 6 meeting in San Diego.

The issue of what we call waste affects all of us. climate change is influenced by the byproducts of waste, namely what we have called the greenhouse gases including methane.

The revolution to further bring the issues to awareness further came into focus as leaders in food recovery gathered in San Diego at the Jacobs Center for neighborhood innovation.

This event was organized by the San Diego Food System Alliance Food Recovery Working Group
Groups involved with the Food Recovery Working Group.

Contact: Elly Brown SDFSA Facilitator/Coordinator elly@sdfsa.org She did a marvelous job organizing the days event.

I planted a number iof dreams with heirloom @rareseeds that the collaborative effort's that excited many of the attendees would lead to San Diego becoming further the flagship city where solutions take root.

Props to the many organizations reflected in images in this Facebook album assembled the day of the event.

MORE FROM

In the US, 40% of food is thrown away somewhere between farm to fork, equating to a $165 billion loss each year in resources including energy, land and water. Most of this food waste ends up in landfill causing methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful in global warming than carbon dioxide.

This food system challenge also provides a unique opportunity. It would only take about 10% of the half a million tons of food going into landfill per year to support the half a million food insecure individuals in San Diego County. On Tuesday October 6th 2015, we call food recovery and recycling changemakers, food businesses, institutions, and community advocates to come together to learn and take collective action towards a hunger-free and sustainable San Diego County.
