A Rebirth for Essential Living Practices
Near 75 years ago, Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, in search of safe harbor from forces in the world that asked him to leave life in Europe in the shadows of World War, settled in a new world, where he found vines of grapes growing, and a more welcoming home where friendship was a river that had no borders.
A man with no home any longer in Europe, he rose Above the Battle to root his dreams in essential living practices and meditations from 1000 schools of thought who all had their single common ground, the Laws of Nature. He taught a deep understanding that we cannot ask nature to adapt to us. We are called to adapt our ways and walk to nature.
Fast forward 75 years and we still have those same grapevines growing, and guests who come to the land where once a Miracle Tree offered shade where Szekely poured out laughter and wisdom teachings.
Those teachings still resonate strongly in the guests who walk many differing yet interwhines paths on land not far from the US-Mexico border in a nearby city Tecate.
We are known by the fruits of our labor. Today, hundreds upon hundreds of travelers from around the world come to the #1 destination spa in the world called Rancho La Puerta, and yet for me, the journey I share with Professor Szekely goes back perhaps to the beginning of time when Man and Woman first imagined that when seeds are planted in the imagination, and planted in fertile soil, truly the earth and the soul become soilmates.
Words and names can confuse the issue. Making a home in our lives where birds sing and neighbors and descendants of earlier workers, working here decade after decade, tell the story in their smiles and sense of deep appreciation.
I attended once a birthday party for a woman who was the mate of this man called the Professor and called the Bear by those who loved him. The birthday party of Deborah Szekely was held in a dedicated soccer field, Professor's Park, a gift to the people of Tecate. Nearby to the soccer fields where i have watched employees of the 2000 acre Ranch swing baseball bats, I bear witness to hundreds of children playing and learning sound nature practices at the nearby Environmental teaching center called Las Piedras.
I witness to elegant workers at the Ranch, perfected in skills of essential care and service to the traveler, how long the traveler comes to stay, be it a for days, a week, or more.
Truly the those in the employ of this place where the grapes still grow, are receiving a Universe of education, a true University education. From out of their upward mobility, within the city of Tecate generations of workers are planting gardens and influencing neighbors who may have never entered the gates of Rancho La Puerta. The employees take home knowledge of healthier tortillas and the sight of grand dining. They know better foods and how food can enrich well being.
In the Early days, Rancho La Puerta was called The Essene School of Life, but then changed its name likely out of necessity as much as something practical that would guide more success.
Always better, Siempre major, is the motto, from the lips of the Professor, through the wisdom of Deborah, into the hearts of the Szekely offspring.
Saral Livia Brightwood, the daughter of the professor and Deborah, is always up to more and more good, be it reviving and distilling her Poppa's teachings into a new book, or coming up with more and more fertile ideas where heirloom original seeds will find a home on land that was and still is producing the finest food the earth can produce. Loving kitchen gardeners and soil makers develop top soil one foot deep at nearby Rancho Tres Estrellas, one of the Szekely properties.
As some in the world imagine that perhaps they can feed the next generations without soil at all, or bioengineer our future in a laboratory, one taste of fresh fruit, and the sight of herbs, flowers, trees, and vegetables growing together here dispel the myth that there can be a more perfect technology than Nature's Original Technology.
"Essene! Essene!" the Heavens call out, and here is land and practices that know Essene to mean essential living and an expectancy of the return of the Divine into each person.
Call the movement an Essene Renaissance if you will, Study the teachings of Edmond Bordeaux Szekely in thousands of pages he knew were verbose. Distill all he had to say into a new book for new generations of readers. The Essene Renaissance will echo something that will live forever as long as woman breathes life into mankind, and someone a guest at Rancho La Puerta is stopped in their tracks by a sculpture that epitomizes woman in her rightful place on the earth rising.
The Essene Way, it is in the clean air, healthy sun, feeling of soil underfoot. It is in our walk, walking toward paradise on earth. This my friend, is the Essene Renaissance, and you my friend its gardener.
