- Beware any products that are aggressively marketed with grand claims of dramatic fuel economy increases. Just about all of those claims are fraudulent. Many of these products will actually hurt your fuel economy and reduce horsepower if installed.
** What WILL increase your fuel economy?
- Well first of all, get rid of all that junk in the trunk. Seriously. Most people are hauling around all manner of things in the trunks of their cars that don’t need to be there.
What else:
1) Change your rear end’s gear ratio. A taller gear ratio which is a lower # (closer ratio) will give you slightly slower acceleration, but a higher top speed.. Most importantly, it will make your engine run slower thus doing less work, which means less fuel, at freeway speeds.
2) Install an aftermarket exhaust; replacing your catalytic converter with a low-restriction model. Your catalytic converter probably gunked up inside from years of use, so any new cat will let the engine breathe better. A high performance system may give you even more of an improvement. A high performance exhaust and muffler, of course, will also permit better breathing, thus increasing fuel economy and horsepower. Make sure the exhaust diameter isn’t too huge, or you’ll actually lose torque, due to the fact that your engine needs some back pressure to function properly.
3) Have tune ups and change the oil regularly.
4) Install a K & N reusable air filter. As with the performance exhaust, this helps your engine breathe better, thus increasing power and fuel economy. It’s also possible to replace the air intake with a high performance model and get even more of an improvement.
5) Install an ignition kit from MSD or Jacob Electronics. Either company will sell you a kit that includes a high energy coil, heavy duty spark plug wires... There is in a little box under the hood which contains a computer which will constantly monitor and adjust your timing and spark for maximum power and fuel efficiency. Plus it will also make your engine run smoother...
6) Keep tires fully inflated. This helps fuel economy and emergency lane change handling, and it doesn’t cost anything.

Then there is the HHO method of mileage boosting:
The 2 most common questions asked of a purchaser of an HHO system may be the best questions to ask if you want to see if the seller is truthful & reputable..
- They are as follows:
1) What is the LPM (liters per minuet output) of the HHO cell system?
2) How high will a system bring up fuel economy / What are the fuel economy gains will I see on my vehicle?
==================================================
- Lets start with question one, LPM (Liters per Minute)
Lets face it, I have the biggest cell available with the very best hose, wiring and largest reservoir tanks. It will out perform anything.
You still need to be able to answer the question for yourself:
- It’s not difficult to figure; if the seller is being truthful you just need some simple formulas and math along with some common sense to pinpoint the truth and get around the U Tube - Hype.
- Tool 1:
Faradays law - on electrolysis is as follows voltage x amps x seconds for LPM) / 3600 = watt hours...
OK Lets do the math, 13.1 volts x 27 (the amps stated) x 20 (60 seconds divided by the 3 lpm stated) / 3600 =1.95 LPM.
- Tool 2:
You need to know the formula for cell efficiency, it is as follows in 2 ways:
- Efficiency:
100 x 7744 x volume in liters / (voltage x amps x test period in seconds) = efficiency
- Tool 3:
Use the above with some common sense. Some sellers will claim their cells are running over 65% efficient aren’t telling the truth.
Why?
Just think about it, when done right, power transfer is not an efficient thing to begin with.
As manufactures all use stainless steel to construct the cell, stainless steel is a terrible conductor of electric, platinum is the best for electrolysis but would be too costly.
Then every production cell has current leakage between plates, through electrolyte and so on.
- ** Plus Nobody is producing a cell with tolerances that are 100%.
All of the above add up, so if you have a loss of 3% in power transfer, 15% for using stainless steel instead of platinum, 15% for current leakages and 5% on cell tolerances it is easy to see how it is difficult to get beyond 65% efficiency.
There’s many more factors that effect efficiency, so to keep it simple.
Look at the hardware and wiring in the kit..
Using the above you now know that a reasonable figures to achieve 1 LPM are ~18 – 20 Amps @ 13.5 volts. So if the cell producer says it will do 3 LPM it would need to wiring to handle 60 Amps. Most cell producers will give you 1/4″ studs to attach the wires to. Keep in mind that the studs there giving on there cell aren’t even big enough to carry that amount of power. If there are sellers stateing 6 LPM.
That system would need for 120 Amps?
===================================================
For independent verification of the above “reasonable amp verses LPM figures” go to the
** International HHO Institute at http://www.ihhoi.org/
They have certified cell tests results you can count on being right and agree with the above.
====================================================
Tool 3:
The physical size of the cell and the amount of active surface area there is in it.
Active surface area is the areas of plate that contact the electrolyte. “Dry cells with sizes that make sense” and a comparison chart under cell comparisons in my website.
It tells the whole story which is in short is when you produce oxyhydrogen gas in the cell it pushes out the electrolyte necessary to make the HHO itself.
Eventually the cell will become “ HHO gas bound ” with its own HHO. A compact cell with a claim of multiple LPM’s, it’s just not possible unless its being force fed electrolyte with a pump. Force pumping electrolyte is a common method used on Semi/Large diesel systems combined with 6 x 6″ 21+ plate cells.
Or you can use the SFS 12 x 12″ design to get around pumps for large capacity)
Active area is another comparison sellers are “misguiding” there purchaser with. In fact I have not yet seen one person telling the truth. Again just ask the size of the inside of there gasket and do the math.

- At this point you may be disappointed with the reality because you think you will never get something that can conceivably produce enough to do anything.
You just don’t need numerous LPM’s to do the job in any standard auto. In fact most units for over the road Semi’s run less than 3 LPM and give 20% gains in fuel economy.
The best results come from a combination of top notch products and honest sellers...
=================================================
Question 2:
- How much will my vehicle gain from this system?
There’s no solid answer as 2 of the same vehicle can come out with different results. Here’s a rational guideline. 20 – 50% + with a reasonable amount being 35%.
So if you get 20% don’t be disappointed, there’s likely a reason you will stumble upon that will enable you to get higher. If you get 35% be happy.
** Only special test engines will ever get 100%+.
Important I have to point something out. At this point the majority of consumers that are seeing these are ~35%: but when you see ads and websites you see nothing but these 70% + results. This is a huge red flag to stay away from this seller as they are misguiding you.
