"Pay us, or ELSE" - the empty threat of AntiVirus protection by Karlin .....
Antivirus protection is not needed, they just scare us into it. Create the Problem, Offer the Solution

Blog - would I feel good about "joining in" on something with a "zero-sum" benefit, especially if it costs me money? Or would I feel better about resisting the pressure to "go along, everybody needs one"?
I am talking about Virus Protection. This scandalous piece of salesmanship is a "zero-sum benefit" in that the best we can hope for is that there is no damage done, that nobody plants a virus in our computer. And, even WITH the protection paid for, many computers are infected anyhow - it is said that a good hacker can defeat the most sophisticated anti-virus codes in mere minutes.
The most nefarious part of the whole thing is the possibility, no matter how small, that it is the anti-virus people, those who sell you the protection, who are the CREATORS of the viruses that lock up your computer. The rationale for this theory is as solid as it gets - ITS WORTH A LOT OF MONEY!!
It is all summed up in my favourite little saying "they Create the Problem, and then Offer you the Solution" - or "CTP-OTS" as an acronym.
I hope you are following me so far. It is very similar to a gang of punks who "sell protection to the shoppe owners" in the cities - they offer to protect your business from shoplifters and break ins through the night if you give them a few thousand Euros or dollars every month... and if you decline their offer they beat the tar out of you and steal your goods!!
And, they don't protect you from ship lifters or watch your store at night.
With Anti-virus, if you "refuse their offer", they don't even beat you up or infect your computer - at least not any more than those who DID buy the anti-virus software.
The facts are that people who buy anti-virus software still get infected... and that those who do not buy it often do not get infected. The rates are very close to being the same - you are no more likely to get a virus WITH the protective software than without.
Furthermore, if for any reason you should try to UNINSTALL anti-virus software, your computer will never be right again. It is very hard to fix, and you might have to pay someone to get it right again.
Furthermore, with the quick changeover in Microsoft's operating systems, there is only a small likely hood that your computer will be targeted with a malicious virus before your computer's useful life is over.
Also,MOST of those viruses will come to you when you do downloads... and maybe that is your entire reason for living, but if you can avoid doing downloads from web sites you are not sure about, you will likely never be infected.
In the interests of proving that Anti-Virus is one of those "pressure to join up" con jobs that is a waste of money, and that the world would be a better place if we just quit doing it - "resist the nefarious corporate thug!!" - I will open myself up for attacks by viruses [because I don't believe it will happen - although I acknowledge it could, especially if an anti-virus company sees this they will attack me!!} I HEREBY DE CLARE THAT I AM ON MY 10TH YEAR WITHOUT ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION.
My computer is also over 10 years old, and I am still managing to make XP work, but Adobe and Updates and several other programs don't work well on it anymore.... but my 15 year old camera software still works great - I use the photo editor with my new camera. I mention this to prove that the old programs CAN work on newer systems, and therefore it is a CHOICE of Adobe to help Microsoft FORCE us to get a new Operating System.
Really, we have to take back our world Folks. The corporate mandate to do "whatever it takes" has gotten into everyone's life.
Have a nice day online - I am!!
