Plants Exposed by Melting Ice

A new study shows that the present warmth in the Eastern Canadian Arctic exceeds the peak warmth there in the Early Holocene, when solar energy reaching the Northern Hemisphere in summer was roughly 9 percent greater than today.

As ice caps today recede they expose dead plants killed long ago when the ice cap formed and then preserved ever since by the ice.

This summer, 2013, a science team collected some of those newly-exposeed plants, in the form of dead moss clumps from Baffin Island, which lies mostly within the Arctic Circle.

The scientists used radiocarbon dating to determine that those mosses had not been exposed to the elements since at least 44,000 years ago, and when they combined their evidence with ice-core samples it became apparent that the mosses could not have lived any later than 120,000 years ago.

The most significant warming in the Baffin Island region didn’t start until the 1970s, and therefore it has to be due to increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

----------------------Aside:

I just want to stick a thought in here about the Tar Sands Tailings Ponds - no real relation to the study above...

If the Alberta Tar Sands area was to get hit by a rainstorm like Calgary was hit by this summer, that amount of rain would cause the TAILINGS PONDS to OVERTOP.

The toxic contents of those tailings ponds would then be washed into the Athabasca River, which is less than 100 meters from some of the tailings ponds. From there, those waters find their way to the Arctic Ocean.

Imagine all that toxic water in the pure environments of the rivers and Artic Ocean!! It would devastate life in and around the waters.

The Tar Sands Tailings Ponds are "the worlds largest dams".

[this deserves it's own post... but if readers could please post this idea on Facebook, etc. it would help eliminate the Alberta Govt. and oil company excuse that "such an event could not have been predicted".]
