I am urging you to join the 90 percent of the American people who want federal labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. These GE foods have not been tested for their long-term health implications. We have right to know about our food and to have the freedom to choose what we buy and serve our families.

Powerful interests are trying to keep America in the dark about which foods are genetically engineered, and those interests recently spent $45 million in California preserve that secrecy by defeating Prop 37. Please endorse federal labeling of GE foods, and vote against any legislation that would bar the Food and Drug Administration, or the states, from mandating labeling GE food.

In addition, I ask that you oppose language in the House version of the Farm Bill, which may be included in the final conferenced Farm Bill, which strips the federal government of much of its authority to regulate genetically engineered crops:

• Preventing review of GE crops under the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, or other environmental law;
• Prohibiting other agencies from offering expertise to the USDA in the review of GE crops;
• Setting short deadlines for USDA review of GE crops and forcing automatic approvals if deadlines are not met;
• Codifying transgenetic contamination of crops and foods, causing loss of markets and biodiversity; and
• Limiting EPA oversight of GE crops to only those that contain a pesticide.

Food is one of life’s sustaining substances that binds Americans together in a common culture, and we have the right to know the truth about what we eat. I urge you to support federally mandated labeling of genetically engineered foods. It is time to stop powerful interests from using loopholes to keep Americans unaware about our food. I look forward to your response.
