Update March 18, 2012: "Is Dirt the New Prozac?":
"The scientists said that one might derive dirt's benefit directly by rooting around in a vegetable garden, or by eating lettuce or carrots picked from that garden. Popular media ran with the findings. 'Is Dirt the New Prozac?' asked Discover magazine."

If you are around the Prescott, Arizona area then be aware that there has been a " high concentration of arsenic shown in many (soil) samples. Some samples with arsenic levels up to 12%." As reported in: "What your local government is not telling you can kill you" by Walter Burien 05/22/12

"Prescott, AZ for decades had a problem with high concentrations of arsenic in well water and most wells in several areas were shut down. Most water supplied to Prescott, AZ now comes from the Chino Valley aquifer 15-miles from downtown Prescott. Even the Chino valley aquifer water supply was having a problem with its levels of arsenic.

Prescott, AZ / Yavapai County as shown in the following map had the highest grouping of arsenic in its wells for the state of Arizona. Well arsenic levels map / Arizona - http://www.cityofprescott.net/_d/arsenicarizonagroundwater-1.pdf"

Just read chapter five in:
"The Extra-Ordinary Healing Powers of Ordinary Things" by Larry Dossey, M.D. titled: Dirt. It has 46 "Notes" with a number of book references that I am intending to look into more deeply. The message here is clear to me and one that I could immediately add "notes" to as well. I am immediately thinking in terms of raw milk.

Here's one of the last paragraphs from that chapter:
"In cities around the world, we find statutes honoring the contributions of individuals who waged war successfully against infections and uncleanliness - Pasteur, Nightingale, Lister, Koch, Fleming, Salk, and scores of others. Yet there is not even a simple plaque any where that honors the contributions that a bacterium, fungus, virus, or just plain dirt make to our immune system - contributions without which none of us would be alive."
