The Present and Future States Of The Small Farm by chef jem .....

Chef Jem expresses his concerns regarding what appears to be an attack against small farms by the State.

Friends of mine attended a recent ecological farming conference and one of them reported on information shared at that event that may be of interest to anyone concerned about the immediate future of small farms.

My friend says the State is (somehow) prohibiting farm apprenticeships and volunteers from working on the farms. I would like to talk with others who are most knowledgeable about this (and who are supporters of the ecological farming movement).

Also - I am friends with a small organic farm that was fined about 10 days ago apparently for not participating in the State's Workers Comp program. The incident appears to have been an aggressive action on the part of the State as there has been no reported complaints from anyone at the farm. My friend says it's part of the State's current revenue collection mission to go after small farms. Apparently the $8,000 fine makes it well worth the effort that is required by the State to have agents go into the field. I wondered if there are other small farms experiencing this or similar "offers" from the State. If so it seems the farms could join together in some kind of a cooperative way to learn how they can take lawful control of these kinds of "offers" from the State and especially to respond without prejudice to their Rights. If such mutual support is already being contemplated I would very much appreciate knowing of whom I may contact regarding that. I'm also asking to be referred to where this kind of small farm support could be considered.
