Counting Calories? by chef jem .....

Chef Jem rejects a question and offers a highly informative explanation.

A inquirer asks:
"I am approx 180 cm Tall and weigh 116 KG. How Much Calories should I eat to lose 2 lbs per day. ..."

I rejected this question with the following explanation:

Apparently you want to lose some weight and apparently you want to include calorie restriction in addition to exercise. You are asking me about the calorie-to-weight relationship. If that's all you are looking for then I think you may want to direct your question to someone who would just love to calculate that for you. I have absolutely no interest doing that for you!

My intention is to offer information, insight, inspiration, possibly some wisdom and truths that are largely based on the nutritional findings of Dr. Weston A. Price (author of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration), the nutritional therapy of Dr. Tom Cowan (author of The Fourfold Path to Healing) and others who have presented their knowledge on how we can use "food as our medicine". I do not see a connection in your question on calories to using food as your medicine. Weston A. Price did not have a lot to say about calories but one thing he did say was:

"It is possible that man has lost through disuse some of the normal faculty for consciously recognizing body requirements. In other words, the only hunger of which we now are conscious is a hunger for energy to keep us warm and to supply power. In general, we stop eating when an adequate amount of energy has been provided, whether or not the body building and repairing materials have been included in the food. (Only) The heat and energy factor in our foods is measured in calories. In planning an adequate diet, a proper ratio between body building and energy units must be maintained. ..."

The point of offering all of that to you is to say that I don't recommend thinking just in terms of calories as they do not measure all our nutritional needs. With regards to food and nutrition, calories alone, IMO, is a truly fractionated approach and therefore just restricting calories possibly will not offer you a healthy, sustainable support. I have no idea what your present diet consists of and where you are thinking of restricting "calories". In my extensive work as a private chef therapist for a client who's goal was to lose weight we did not consider calories at all! We used Dr. Cowan's approach on weight-loss which is to correct the condition of poor nutrition (the unmet essential needs that over-eating typically attempts to fill but fails due to a diet of nutrient depleted foods). If the diet you are on is not meeting your needs then cutting back on calories may actually be asking for real nutritional trouble. I would not wish that for you.

You might want to reconsider your approach and give more regard to your nutrition so that you can more confidently reach your goals with minimized health risks.
