MIKE REYNOLDS is a GARBAGE WARRIOR. He asks in his documentary if we need crises such as the TSUNAMI and KATRINA before we we talk action to learn how to build in harmony with nature. There is a dwelling he build in the Tsunami area that helps people live without a plumbed in sewer system and without being connected to water lines. Heating and cooling in his EARTHSHIPS are managed through building practices in harmony with how a human can live.

Watched GARBAGE WARRIOR last night
at our monthly LA MILPA ORGANICA FARM polluck.
I took a lot of inspiration and gained
perspective from watching this documentary
about the life of MIKE REYNOLDS,
an architect who lost his licence for going
against the Earth damaging building pracitices
that most of live inside.
That is a new concept for most of us.
We are living by systems of design that are
mandated and supported by legislative actions
that are very much out of sync with our
inherent human design.
Reynolds designs were violations
of New Mexico law for many years.
He went through the hoops. He put on a suit
and walked the halls of both local and statewide
political processes and building codes
as a warrior for nature.
When his efforts to ask for a site where
architects like himself could have freedom to
experiment and make some tests of other kinds
of buildings were consistently rebuffed,
Mother Earth stepped in a created the Tsnumi
that destroyed so many lives a few years before
KATRINA.
Reynolds efforts to build living structures
in harmony with the natural elements were
invited in. He worked labor intensively with
what others call trash, to inpire the locals.
He showed them they could co-create structures
in harmony with natural building designs that
would allow the indwellers to live without a need
for pumped n toilets. He showed that they could
build structures in harmony with nature that could
capture the more than 100 inches of rain.
Longhaired Reynolds and his team of architectural
twentieth Century dropouts--dropouts from the conventional
ways of building--saves the lives of the locals
who were in crisis.
When the story spread, and the resounding
success of his endeavors were noted around the world,
architects reinvited Reynolds to reapply for his
architects license. This license was again granted.
Some of the laws that he was asking for,
repeatedly defeated and yohummed, were apparently
accepted in New Mexico.
Reynolds asks in GARBAGE WARRIOR,
must we wait for the crisis to hit us here before
we will take action to turn away from our current
dibilitating unearthy building and living practices
before we begin to live sustainably?
He makes the point that we are in crisis already
and do not have decades for the political process to catch up.
HOW DOES WHAT I SAW IN THE FILM
APPLY TO EVENTS HERE AT HOME and
at LA MILPA ORGANIC FARM?
SoCal is in a water crisis now.
BARRY LOGAN, the head voice at
LA MILPA, is concerned about his decreasing
allotment of water from the city in the coming months.
If we want local farmers like Barry Logan to wake
up in the morning and be able to say,
"Happiness is Organic!" we are going to have
to make sure that Barry can build a water well.
Building a well on his land may face some
stumbling blocks from the current city codes.
At this point, he does not know all the ramifications.
He would go so much easier if the existing codes
favored local farming and saw Barry Logan and people
like Mike Reynolds as wayshowers.
All of our local organic farmers are national heroes.
Anyone attempting to learn how to live together in
community today are national heroes.
LIFE HERE AT
THE ENCHANTED GARDEN INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY
I have been living on this land since 1982
and been the main voice here for more than 10-15 years.
We are located within walking distance of
San DIego State University, a student population
with more than 35,000. The university churns out
more and more diplomas of lawbreakers each year--
lawbreakers from how to live by the laws
decreed by our human design.
If supported, the dreaming capacity of men
like Reynolds and Logan, will come up with natural
solutions because they are living close to plants
and other living things.
It is time for ideas such as
the ENCHANTED GARDEN
a name for our renewed earth to stand
up inside our world now and be seen.
It is time for figments of imagination
such as KEEP THE BEET MEDIA STAR
the WORLD's FIRST TALKING BEET PLANT
to have their say.
How would our world work from a plant's
perspective? How would we design our
homes in harmony if a talking plant
was the Czarina of Foods, rather
than the FDA and its authorities
dictating and enforcing laws
that maintain the dying status quo?
I understand that MICHAEL POLLEN
wrote the BOTANY OF DESIRE
from a plant's point of view.
He and KEEP THE BEET must be friends.
It is time now to sit in circles
and listen to one another.
It is time now to sit in natural settings
and begin to grow our renewed earth
based on the deepest heartfelt
holy desires of our human design.
