Life on Earth
Our perception of the world around might not be perfectly accurate. That is a big surprise for some people, and not so much for others.
For one thing, we are spinning so fast that when the Space Shuttle takes off, it gets a big boost from the spin of the earth because it flings it up at a greater speed than without the spin. That is why they like to launch from the most southerly point possible, i.e. Florida instead of the North Pole; it would be even better at the equator but they don't go there to launch because of "national pride", and because politics and security have not caught up to science yet.
For another, it has been almost 40 years since Jim Morrison died, and even longer since he wrote these now-forgotten words:
"What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down"
He had his "ear down to the ground". I doubt many kids today know about that, but when Jim was dying and I was 10 yrs. old, it seemed important to know "how to listen for the Buffalo coming" by putting an ear down to the ground. Or, to get a sense of the state of the earth. It is a very gentle sound, you have to be quiet to hear it, and your mind has to be open to understand it.
Listening, not talking; Seeking, not believing that you know everything; Sustain, maintain, and heal, or plunder voraciously at the highest speed possible. Which of those paths will we take? It relates to maturity, as opposed to adolescent behaviours. If it were sex we were talking about, would you rather "get in and get off" or would it be better to become one with your partner and have a well-timed, mutual orgasm that makes you feel like you are floating in an ocean of love, all goose-bumply and tingling?
Did that get your attention? - sex is allways more interesting than environmentalism, but really they are the same kind of mindset. We would be living a much much better life if we were not so ignorant of the potential all around us that nature offers. The Space Shuttle uses the spin of the earth to get it into orbit, for example - that is using the nature of things to get the job done. We have for too long been stuck with the idea that we are above all that. We like to pretend that we want to be separate from nature, but inwardly we are seeking it.
Maybe we would be moving in a better direction if we had more poets writing the lyrics for popular music these days. I am a child of the 60's, it is in my soul to seek a better way, but I feel like I am stuck in some foreign place where ignorant people run the show and they are all so damn sure that they know what is best, all full of patriotism and "support our troops". We have seen it over and over, it keeps coming up but it never takes us anywhere. Pretty soon now we will be reaping the harvest of what we have sewn. 2050 is just over the hill. Put your ear to the ground and listen for it, you might hear the sound of a butterfly screaming [another line from "The Musics Over" by the Doors].
Turn out the lights when you leave, ok?
