Two hummingbird babies hatched in the nest in my backyard.

When they hatch, hummingbird babies are tiny, shiny, black, and have no feathers. They have tiny blunted beaks and their closed eyes bulge out.
This photo is of a new hatchling. The other egg hatched 2-3 days later. Photo taken June 27, 2009
At about 10 days old, the babies are much bigger and their feathers are growing in; their eyes are still closed and their beaks are still blunted. Mother still spends her time foraging and then feeding them and sitting on them, although the babies are squeezed tightly in the nest and are almost as big as she is! About three weeks after hatching, the babies will be fully grown.
