Go Between was only the fifth favorite to win in 18 runnings of the Pacific Classic, all since 1997. The most recent was Lava Man in 2006.

Go Between owner Peter Vegso is the publisher of the popular “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books – including “Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul.” The $600,000 winner's share of the purse wasn't exactly chicken soup, and it boosted the career earnings of Go Between to $2,783,880.

The victory also qualified Go Between for a spot in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita under the “Win and You're In” program.

Vegso said the ill-fated Cigar venture here hadn't come up in discussions with Mott. “He's not the greatest communicator,” Vegso said. “Sometimes it's tough to get a sentence out of him. . . .

“But I'm glad we got the job done for him.”
