As a new mother, you had ten months to prepare for your parenting journey, but was it enough? What no one tells you is that you can't anticipate all of the changes that a new baby brings. You can make endless lists and transform your home with baby gear and postpartum necessities, but somehow life will find a way to shake your confidence. Here are five important tips to stay healthy as a new mom.

1. Take Nutrition Seriously

Creating life is a massive endeavor that takes a toll on your body. That's why it is critical that you don't try to cut calories in the first few months after giving birth. At the same time, you have to take your nutrition seriously, which means focusing on whole foods instead of processed foods and consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. This approach to nutrition is common in the holistic women's health movement, because it emphasizes the way that foods and hormones interact.

2. Approach Exercise Gently

New mothers sacrifice so much to care for their children. At times it can feel like your body does not perform how you'd like it to. You might be tempted to jump into a rigorous exercise program to get back to a certain level of fitness you had achieved before getting pregnant. But there are dangers to going too hard too soon.

Your body's joints, connective tissues, pelvic region and organs need time to recover from the intense physical transformation of pregnancy and birth. You can honor your body's ability to transform by approaching exercise gently in the first few months. Walking, stretching, swimming and light cardio are great options for getting active and protecting your body while it heals.

3. Make Time for Yourself

Time moves differently when you are a new mother, but that doesn't mean you should put yourself last on your to-do list. Your mental health is always important. With hormonal changes, sleep deprivation and an overwhelming amount of new responsibilities, parenthood will challenge your sense of self and mental wellbeing. You can give yourself a mental health boost by doing something you enjoy, even if it's only for five minutes. You can call a loved one, write in your journal, make art, go on a walk, or watch an episode of your favorite show.

4. Prioritize Good Posture

Whether you're breastfeeding, bottle feeding or simply carrying your little one everywhere, your back and shoulders will begin to feel strained. This is a critical period to focus on good posture and correct positions for physical tasks like picking up your baby, feeding your baby and more. Avoid hunching when feeding and playing with your baby, and never use your lower back to lift your child or heavy objects. It can lead to back strain or injury.

5. Unplug During Naptime

Everyone will tell you to sleep when your baby sleeps, but that is easier said than done. If you can, you will want to rest when your child is asleep. But if you find it too difficult to take a short nap, you can utilize your child's naptime in other ways.

When the house is quiet, use that time to unplug from social media, the news and screen time. Instead, you can meditate, listen to music, read or write in a journal. These activities are all beneficial for mental health and overall wellbeing. It can be tempting to want to catch up on social media when your little one is asleep, but try to rest your mind in those moments of quiet.

From doctors to friends and family, your life as a new mother is likely overflowing with well-meaning advice. Some of it will be helpful, but some of it will be unnecessary. Use these five tips to keep you and your health at the center of attention, and remember to trust your intuition when it comes to you and baby.
