Art:Stitched EcoMaGs by Mayah .....

I haven't made refrigerator magnets for some time. I call these "Eco MaGs" because they are made out of recycled paper products, with a magnet backing. They are not only mini works of art, they are utilitarian, too!

Every now and then I take apart old art and reuse it to either make something new or to refresh it. This Eco MaG is made out of "double recycling"--the original one that I made a couple of years ago came from a magazine photo and reused greeting card and cardboard; I updated it with a brighter background paper but reused all of the other parts.

I have been playing with stitching on paper, either by machine or by hand using embroidery floss. The hand stitching is labor intensive yet I really enjoy it and find it to be very relaxing.

For the flower MaG, the stitch holes for the orange outline stitch were first punched out by hand using a nail and thimble and then embroidered by hand. The yellow straight stitching around the edges was easier as a sewing machine without thread was used to punch the holes first; then 2 strands of embroidery floss were used for hand sewing. The same procedure was used for the outline and zig-zag stitching around the fish, owl, and bear.

"Eco MaGs by mayah" are made from reused paper and other materials; found objects; sturdy cardboard backing; non-toxic glue and non-VOC acrylic coating; magnet

Reused photos are from junk mail/greeting cards/magazines/calendars/brochures/advertisements, including from the following organizations:
