The International Documentary Film Series
Last Monday's Yodok Stories was a great success. The film was extremely moving and the speaker after the film greatly added to our understanding of the situation in North Korea.
Don't miss this Monday's film: The Green Wave

The Green Wave is an incredible portrait of a modern day rebellion and feels more urgent than ever in these ever-changing times.

The Green Wave is about the uprising in June 2009 when the Iranian people hoped for change through the upcoming elections. This powerful documentary integrates animation, live-action footage, and testimonials to tell the world about the events that transpired before and after the elections.
Special Guest Speaker: We are privileged to have UCSD Professor Babak Rahimi answer questions after the film. Dr. Rahimi was present during the green revolution in Iran in June 2009 and is an expert on modern Iranian culture. He gave interviews to CNN and other media outlets during the revolution. In the late 1990s, Rose Mapendo was imprisoned with her family during violence that engulfed the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rose escaped with nine of her ten children and eventually resettled in Phoenix, Arizona. More than a decade later, Rose and her left-behind daughter Nangabire are reunited. The films depicts Nangabire as she adjusts to life with her family and in an American high school. As they get to know one another, mother and daughter must come to terms with a painful past, and define what it means to be a survivor, a woman, a refugee, and an American.
Speaking after the film:
Refugee high school students from IRC's Peacemakers Club will speak after the film about their experiences adjusting to life in an American high school. The Peacemaker Club is part of the IRC Students Plus After School Program at Crawford High School.
