Dead Sea Scrolls Time Magazine Cover -1957 by YourEnchantedGardener .....

Time Magazine 1957 cover: The Dead Sea Scrolls. This is one of the few areas I found where the name Essene is associated with the current world class exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum Dead Sea Scroll exhibit.

The cover appears in the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit
currently on view at the San Diego Natural History Museum
through December 31, 07.

From a press release
issued by Delle EWillett,
Director of Marketing

"San Diego, October 31, 2007--Ten years after they were discovered,
in a time before digital cameras and instant communication, many individuals'
first glimse of the Dead Sea Scrolls was a painting by renowned American Artist
Aaron Bohrod, which was featured on the cover of the April 1957 issue
of TIME magazine. Today, 60 years after their discovery, the scrolls continue
to rouse debate and speculatiion, through Bohrod's painting remains a timeless
depiction of one of the greatest archeological finds of this age.

The text of the scroll fragment is accurately painted from a commentary on the book
of Habakkuk in which an unknown Essene writer sought to tell the story of his people
through commentary on this particular section of the Old Testament. The Essenes
were a sect of Jews, believed by some scholars to have written many of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Translation of the fragment reveals the importance of Yom KIppur, the Jewish Day of
Atonement, and the human struggle with temptation."

Celebrating its 133rd year, the San Diego Natural History Museum
is the second oldest scientific institution in California, third wes of the
Mississippi. A binational museum, its mission is to interpret the natural
world though research, education, and exhibits; to promote understanding
of the evolution and divesity of Southern California and the peninsula of Baja California
and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment. Located in Balboa Park,
at the intersection of Village Place and Park Blvd., it is open daily except ofr Thanksgiving
and Christmas.

The cover is one of the few places in the exhibit where
the Essenes and the Dead Sea Scroll connection is made.

Although many historians have connected the Dead Sea Scrolls
and the Essenes, some scholars, would like to interpret archeological
digs as suggesting the Essenes did not inhabit Qumran.

I am curious why the name Essene is downplayed in the
current world class exhbit.
