If you are experiencing rapid mood changes, it is worth knowing that taking medication as prescribed, is only one of many treatment options. A holistic approach focuses on treating both your mind and body to help you regain vitality. But what are the principles of holistic treatments? Briefly, the holistic approach refers to a support that looks at the whole individual, not just their mental needs. This support also involves emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

Regularly physical movement, a healthy diet, and even talk therapy are only a few of the many holistic approaches we can use, along with prescribed medication, to accelerate recovery from depression, anxiety, or hormonal imbalance which might cause the famous swift mood changes.

What are the most common causes of mood swings?

A mood swing has the mysterious ability to make you feel like you are absolutely out of control and hypersensitive to almost everything you look, touch, feel and hear. As irritating as this might be, it may help you know that you are not alone. According to the American Medical Association, almost 75% of women have to face emotional anguish between the beginning of menstruation and the culmination of menopause. Factors such as psychological distress, aging, and even exposure to free radicals affect cognitive health and memory function.

Premenstrual Syndrome

PMS or premenstrual symptoms normally occur in women 1 to 2 weeks before a period. Women usually experience changes in appetite, depression, bloating, fatigue and many more. Almost 90% of women experience PMS-like symptoms before their menstruation. What is really troubling and challenging for women, is that the severity of these symptoms are prone to change from one month to another, and even improve or worsen with age.

Nevertheless, it is yet unclear why the premenstrual period triggers these symptoms. More studies have shown that a change in the hormone estrogen is more likely to be the leading cause of this rapid mood change. With a few days and weeks before the period, the estrogen levels increase and decrease dramatically.

Stress, anxiety, and fear

Anxiety and stress can also generate fear, which is a potent and challenging emotion. When we experience a fearful thought or fear-provoking conundrum, it is simple for us to have an emotional response. We allow fear to control us. When we feel like something is not under our control anymore, that fear can be so pronounced that we eventually become more susceptible to anger, sadness, as a result, and experience mood swings.

Hormonal Imbalance

Estrogen is what causes the PMS-related shifts in mood, but other hormones might be to blame, too. One of the most common causes of mood changes is Hypothyroidism. This happens when our thyroid gland cannot produce enough hormone, resulting in hormone disorder. Hypothyroidism is what influences mood changes and triggers other symptoms.

Practice Stress Management

It is natural to experience jealousy, anger, hurt even though many people shy away from showing them. But have you ever felt overwhelmed by these emotions, or that you spend too much time and energy getting over these feelings? Pretty much like beauty products, when it comes to stress management solutions, you have a wide range of options to choose from and put yourself together. From regular exercises, yoga to mindfulness, these are famous tools one can rely on to reduce the symptoms of mood swings.

For instance, being a physically active person might improve your overall health, muscles, build your muscle strength and bone density. Meanwhile, meditation or mindfulness, in combination with the proper dosage of organic CBD oil, has also proved helpful in treating anxiety, leading to an increased state of calm and soothing feelings.

A significant number of people are using CBD products and meditation to assist in recovering from swift mood changes and anxiety. CBD works hand in hand with meditation, as CBD provides an excellent meditation boost.

The right foods

Luckily for those who experience mood swings, the food we eat can have a considerable effect on the mood. A smart diet, rich in complex carbohydrates such as legume, whole grains, peas, peanuts, bean, and lentils can work wonders for your serotonin levels.

When it comes to prevalent mood swings, nutrition plays a crucial aspect. To better understand how your moods are fed or starved, you have to understand how your brain works. One big group of chemicals that influence your mood are the neurotransmitters in your brain, led by the serotonin levels. Such substances can make or break your day. They determine whether you are going to feel tired, energetic, irritable, spaced out, or great. And, like any other system, they require ‘’fuel’’ or sugar, preferably the type of sugar that comes from low carbs.

The idea is, as you know, to maintain steady blood sugar and care for your daily nutrition, slowly feeding your brain with these essential substances and balancing your mood.

Pay attention to your sleep routine

A good night of sleep can work wonders even during the most challenging PMS. Sleep can cure a lot of ills including, extreme mood shifts and irritability. Thus, make sure you aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of steady sleeping hours per night. In case this might be too daunting for you, try to at least add 20 or 30 extra minutes in your sleeping schedule, so you can rest a couple of minutes more than you normally would. If that proves successfully, try adding 20 minutes more whenever possible.

Just as no one is different, not all treatment for mood swings should be alike. Thus, relying on standard medication prescription and holistic approaches without deeply examining the main causes of mood swings is not the best idea. If you are dealing with rapid mood changes or simply find your emotions to run up and down, first make sure you take into consideration your overall hormone imbalance based on your lifestyle and habits. In case you need to work out your serotonin levels, pay attention to what, when, and how you eat and make from minerals and vitamins an integral part of your daily routine.
