Secure Forever: God's Promise or Our Perseverance?.
========
The most important issue any human being will ever face is where they will spend eternity. According to the Bible, every person either will spend forever in Heaven or forever in Hell. This is a sobering thought. As someone once said, "Forever is a long time." This is perhaps the greatest understatement in the history of the world.
With that in mind, the most important day of my life was August 2nd, 1972. Someone cared enough about me to invite me out to a meeting where I understood for the first time what Jesus Christ had done for me through His sacrifice for me on the cross. In simple terms, I understood the gospel.
The man who was speaking that night quoted the following verses,
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast"
(Ephesians 2:8-9).
He emphatically explained that my good works would never get me to Heaven. Being raised in a religion that had taught me that my good works were necessary, he captured my attention. He then explained what Jesus Christ had done for me.
"For he [God] hath made him [Jesus Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
He explained that I could know beyond a shadow of a doubt from the Bible that I was going to Heaven whenever I died. He quoted 1 John 5:13,
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God" (1 John 5:13).
It was at that point that it seemed like time stood still. I knew I was facing the most important decision of my life. It was clear to me that I was lost. It was also clear that I could do nothing to save myself and that Jesus Christ paid the complete payment for my sin.
I knew that I needed to trust Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, and I did. The moment I trusted Christ, according to the Bible, I was saved forever by God's grace. From that moment I knew, based on what the Bible said, nothing more and nothing less, that I was eternally secure in Christ. It was the most exciting day of my life!
Without knowing what it all would entail, that night I decided I would spend the rest of my life telling others this good news.
It has been over 33 years now, and the good news is just as fresh today as it ever has been. I never get tired of sharing the gospel. I also have never gotten over the thrill of being saved by grace! The message I believed that night is still the message I believe and preach today, for it is the gospel of salvation found in the Bible. It will never change.
What has changed is my greater understanding of the many ways Satan and even man himself attacks and will continue to attack this message of salvation by grace. Some of the ways Satan works are obvious, yet others are very subtle. We must look at this carefully.
This is as important an issue as eternity itself. If eternal life in Heaven comes only through the gospel, then any other message will give a person a false hope and lead them into an eternity in Hell. Paul said,
"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" 2 Corinthians 11:3).
With that in mind, this book will address two main issues:
The preservation of the saints; in other words, the truth and nature of salvation. The Bible clearly teaches the preservation of the saints.
God preserves the believer for all eternity. In other words, we can never be lost once we have put our trust in Christ.
The perversion of the truth in what is called the perseverance of the saints.
I will define and explain more about this later.
Unfortunately, there are many, people who believe this teaching to be the detriment of being truly secure in Christ. {When Right is wrong?}
