Go Between, the winner of last year’s Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) and Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes, died of cardiac arrest following a workout on Monday at Payson Park Training Center in Florida.

The six-year-old Point Given horse had breezed six furlongs in 1:17.80 in preparation for a repeat bid in the Sunshine Millions.

“It’s a real gloomy day around here for us,” said Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who handled Go Between for owner-breeder Peter Vegso. “He had been in the barn since he was a two-year-old and was as sound and as healthy of a horse as you could ask for. It’s just one of the terrible things that can happen. To be honest, we’re all pretty in down in the mouth about it.”

Go Between won the 2006 Palm Beach Stakes (G3) as a three-year-old and made his first major mark in the Virginia Derby (G2), the first of his three triumphs in races worth $1-million.

Beginning late in his four-year-old season, Go Between thrived on synthetic surfaces. He prevailed in the Fayette Stakes (G3) at Keeneland Race Course and the $1-million Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita Park before finishing second to Heatseeker (Ire) in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

Following a second-place finish in the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G1), Go Between defeated Well Armed by a neck in the $1-million Pacific Classic at Del Mar last August. His only subsequent start was a fifth-place finish as the 8-to-1 second choice in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita. He was forced to steady while trapped along the rail at the quarter pole.

“We thought he had a real shot in the Breeders’ Cup but he had some traffic trouble,” Mott said. “He turned out to be a real honest horse. He had some temperament issues as a two- and three-year-old but he grew out of them and developed into such a good, solid horse.”

Bred by Vegso in Florida, Go Between won eight of 27 career starts and earned $2,908,880.

Ranking as a "Mr. Consistency," Go Between shows one of the most impressive resumes among the 15 prospects lining up for Del Mar's Grade I, $1-million Pacific Classic Sunday, August 24, a race that guarantees the winner a place in the Breeders' Cup Classic as part of the "Win and You're In" program.

The 5-year-old son of Point Given has been out of the money only three times in his last 14 starts and is a constant traveler, having run in Southern California three times and in Kentucky once so far this year. His record also shows races at Calder Race Course, Louisiana Downs, Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park over the past two years.

In Southern California, Go Between won the Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita in January, was second in the Santa Anita Handicap and second in the Hollywood Gold Cup. In the Gold Cup, he finished behind expected Pacific Classic foe Mast Track and ahead of Student Council, who is expected to return to defend his 2007 Pacific Classic victory.

Go Between's career statistics show seven wins, seven seconds and six thirds in 25 starts, with $2,183,880 in purse earnings.

Kenny McCarthy, who handles the Bill Mott string, including Go Between, at Churchill Downs, said by telephone, "The horse is doing excellent. We gave him a couple of easy works after he came back from the Hollywood Park race and then put two sharp works into him. He'll work again Monday -- a half-mile or 5 furlongs -- and then we'll ship on Wednesday."

The trip to Del Mar will be the second for McCarthy. He saddled Union Avenue to finish third in the 2006 Del Mar Derby.

Garrett Gomez has the call on Go Between, a horse he's ridden in his four starts this year.

Julio Garcia has been named to ride McCann's Mojave in the Pacific Classic. McCann's Mojave, with career earnings of $1.5 million, will put in his final pre-Pacific Classic work at Golden Gate Fields Saturday and ship to Del Mar on Monday.

Mark Hennig, trainer of Barcola, said his 5-year-old son of Old Trieste will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.

Expected to join Go Between and McCann's Mojave in the starting gate are defending champion Student Council, who will have his final work on Monday and ship to Del Mar Tuesday; 2007 runner-up Awesome Gem; Hollywood Gold Cup winner Mast Track; Out of Control, second in Belmont Park's Manhattan Handicap; Barcola, who will work once more at Saratoga and ship on Tuesday; Well Armed, Surf Cat and Mostacolli Mort, 1-2-3 finishers in Del Mar's San Diego Handicap; Zappa and Tissy Fit, 1-2 in the Cougar II Handicap; Tres Borrachos, the Swaps winner that is also considered a prospect for the Travers Stakes, Saturday, August 23; Delosvientos, on a three-race win streak, and Belo Purse, a recent arrival from Brazil who is considered a longshot to run by co-owner Billy Koch of Little Red Feather Stable.

Got to go to bed.

A day after winning the $1 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) with Colonel John, jockey Garrett Gomez switched coasts to guide favored Go Between to a head victory over Well Armed in the $1 million Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar on Sunday.

Go Between earns a berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic Oct. 25 at Santa Anita with his victory in the Pacific Classic, a "Win and You're In" challenge race. Bill Mott trains Peter Vegso's Florida homebred 5-year-old son of Point Given who has emerged as a star since being switched to synthetic surfaces this year.

Go Between, at 5-2 odds, was ridden by Garrett Gomez and won by a neck. The 5-year-old horse ran 1 1-4 miles in 2:01.18. Mast Track was third, 2 1-2 lengths behind Well Armed.

The victory gave Go Between an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic in a new Win and You're In program that's made certain stakes races BC qualifiers.

Go Between settled in eighth early in the 10-horse field and inched up to fifth with a quarter-mile left. Well Armed, who sat just off the early leaders, took the lead into the stretch but was run down late by Go Between.

"I like to keep him covered early, like a turf horse, because he started off running on grass," Gomez said.

Go Between is trained by Bill Mott, who entered Cigar in the Pacific Classic in 1996, only to see the champion's 16-race win streak snapped by Dare and Go.

Go Between, owned by Peter Vegso, didn't just earn a spot in the starting gate Oct. 25 at Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup Classic. He also merits consideration as a contender because of his performance on synthetic surfaces.

Go Between has three wins and three second-place finishes in six such starts. The Breeders' Cup will be run on a synthetic surface for the first time this year.

Vegso, publisher of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series of books, said Mott made the decision to switch Go Between from grass races to synthetic after the horse perked up training on the Polytrack at Keeneland. The horse has shipped from Kentucky to run four times on California synthetic surfaces this year and produced two wins and two seconds.

"I'm as happy as can be," Vegso said of the prospect of a synthetic Breeders' Cup. "I'm looking forward to it. It would be great if Curlin comes, if Big Brown comes. That would be terrific competition."

Student Council, who won the Pacific Classic when it was run on Polytrack the first time in 2007, finished fifth.

There were three other Win and You're In races on the Del Mar card. John Sadler trained the winner of two of those races.

In the $328,000, Grade II Del Mar Mile on turf, Whatsthescriipt made a strong stretch move to finish three-quarters of a length ahead of Bold Chieftain and earn a spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Gomez rode the Sadler charge in a time of 1:32.40. Global Hunter was third, a neck out of second. A win bet returned $6.

Gomez was aboard Colonel John in winning the Travers on Saturday at Saratoga. He had to take off his first two scheduled mounts Sunday at Del Mar because his flight to the West Coast was late.

"This weekend means a lot to me," said Gomez. "That's two big wins, and two Breeders' Cup starters."

In the $200,000, Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap, Dearest Tricksi prevailed in the 6 1-2-furlong race for fillies and mares. Jockey Mike Smith put Dearest Tricksi on the lead, and she held on to win by a nose over late-charging Tiz Elemental, who was 1 1-2 lengths ahead of third-place La Tee. Dearest Tricksi, timed in 1:15.17 and earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. A win bet returned $6.20.

Sadler claimed Dearest Tricksi away from Cody Autry for owner Tom Mankiewicz for $32,000 at Del Mar on Aug. 4, 2007. She has won seven of eight starts under Sadler's care, including three graded stakes.

Lewis Michael won the $297,500, Grade II Pat O'Brien Handicap to secure a spot in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by Rene Douglas, Lewis Michael rallied from fifth to win by 2 3-4 lengths, running seven furlongs in 1:21.17. Rebellion came on from last in the 12-horse field to finish second, a neck ahead of pacesetter Barbecue Eddie. Lewis Michael returned $19.20 for a win bet.

Midnight Lute, the favorite at 9-10 odds and the defending Breeders' Cup Sprint champion, ran in traff
