Caution With Kelp Supplements
My research has shown that after testing over 4,000 patients for their iodine levels, over 96% of those tested are significantly low in iodine. Many patients ask me if they can take kelp instead of iodine. The amount of iodine in kelp can be variable. Furthermore, I was always concerned that kelp supplements may contain toxic amounts of arsenic or halides. I have tested 2 kelp supplements and found very elevated arsenic levels in both items. Both of these products were marketed heavily ...

Hi Damien,
Your question: Trying to find thte products for your alkalizing drink. Will the north atlantic kelp tablets do the same thing? Thats all I can find locally and that is at
Vitamin Shoppe.
Answer: Tablets contain Fillers, thus it is Best to use either the Kelp Powder or the Kelp powder in Capsules !
It may Depend upon where the Kelp was harvested from as to if it is Better than other kelp ?
The Best kelp comes from the Coldest Cleanest waters, which may mean away from the cities !
Some have found Iceland Kelp to be Good to use and others the Norwegian Kelp !

seems like excellent information, and might awaken some readers’ faith in the value of kelp as a source of whole-food iodine
http://www.gaiaresearch.co.za/kelp.html
slightly bewildering to me however, was the assertion that the kelp (to be assimilable) needs to be ground to the smallest possible size; essentially dust. I take a ground kelp (Frontier brand LD) but it is certainly not dust, and once wet expands into small granules.

the ”laminaria” species of kelp is the species highest in iodine content. this includes any kelp product labeled laminaria digitata, l. japonica, l. saccharina, and l. longissima. the laminaria species of kelp can be 5% or more of iodine per dry weight.
”frontier” brand kelp is laminaria digitata, and therefore has a high iodine content.

ADD KELP, for the minerals, AND/OR IODINE...
by #140253 13 y
I prefer kelp for the minerals, I use a combo of regular kelp along with another that is higher in potassium, since kelp is higher in sodium WHICH YOU NEED, natural sodium, and the others are higher in potassium.
After supplementing with those for a while I added a drop of iodine slowly...kelps help more with the adrenals and have vitamins/minerals so I try not to use a lot of natural iodine since it is an isolated substance! The problem with that is that it takes a lot of kelp, versus smaller amounts of the iodine so I use both!

I live in Australia, and just found some Australian kelp meal, called Golden Kelp. Its from Narooma, southern NSW. Its pretty coarse, but I add it to soups etc, and also take it with a little hot water, which causes the kelp meal to thicken and makes it easier to go down. I bought mine from Macro Wholefoods, but I’m sure I’ve seen it at Mr Vitamins as well. Considering the southern ocean is far cleaner than the northern hemisphere oceans/seas, and kelp is a very efficient sponge for contaminants, I would hazard a guess that our kelp is just as good, if not better than Norweigen kelp. you ...

The main problem with kelp, and mind you content varies, is that kelp can also contain bromine. Bromine, another halogen, can block iodine, defeating the whole purpose. Bromine isn’t always high in kelp, and different kelps contain different amounts and this may not even be a problem in many situations. Some people who react to iodine-rich foods may actually be reacting to the bromine. For me, I have to be careful with an existing thyroid issue. I do take a couple of kelp tablets, but I don’t want to get the bulk of my iodine from kelp. Since I also would like to improve my total body iodi ...

is an excellent source of minerals from the sea, particularly iodine which is very important for the thyroid gland to function properly. The thyroid gland is an important regulator of metabolism and weight. Kelp is also known by the names Bladderwrack and Seawrack. Kelp is the most common type of seaweed in the ocean. The nickname, Bladderwrack, refers to the bladder like air pods (vesicles) that help keep this herb afloat on the ocean surface. When cows consume kelp, they produce more milk and are less likely to suffer from mastitis. Kelp also makes ...

The kelp is a Natural Food, so it may ”NOT” cause you to get too much iodine like taking elemental iodine may do!!!
Elemental iodine may be Dangerous, but Kelp may be Very safe to use, because it is a Natural Food !
Of course all Kelp is not the same Quality, so if you do not get Positive Results with one brand of kelp, then find a Better Quality to use so that you may get the Positive Results which you should get !

Make sure you wet the kelp first. I have coarse ground kelp and putting a teaspoon of it dry in the back of my throat resulted in some very unpleasant choking.
Best thing I’ve found to do is put the kelp in a bowl, pour on some BSM lemon drink to make it a bit more solid. Then eat/chew and wash down with the BSM drink. I think it might be different depending on the coarsely ground your kelp is.
