Re: Estrogen Dominance, copper IUD, copper excess

Hi - You are very wise to be concerned about excess copper from your new IUD. You might to read ”Why Am I Always So Tired?” by Ann Louise Gittleman to learn what she has to say about copper IUDs. www.artlma.com and www.drlwilson.com also have good articles on copper overload, but I can’t remember if they discuss copper IUDs in them.

Copper IUD vs. Mirena

I have experienced low sex drive, vaginal dryness, and decreased sexual enjoyment with the Mirena since having it inserted in November, 2003. I am considering having it replaced with a copper IUD. Are these side effects common with the copper IUD as well?
Thank you for your responses, as doctors and IUD companies don’t seem to recognize that our women’s sex lives ( our drives, orgasms, etc) are actually important enough to address openly, honestly, and directly. Thank you.

Copper and Mirena Similarities

I got a copper IUD in December of 2008 because I could not tolerate hormonal birth control (I had tried multiple pills and even the NuvaRing over a 10 year time period). I researched it pretty thoroughly before I had it placed and never found anything related to the symptoms I experienced (until recently). After six months of having the IUD, I began to develop an alcohol intolerance. I also developed acne like I had never seen before. It was more like boils under my skin rather than typical acne. I became extremely tired and began having severe depression/anxiety (especially during PMS). A ...

I’m thinking about going to the copper IUD because it has no hormones...anyone have any experiences with it? I had the Mirena removed for various reasons...I don’t trust the pill (or myself to take it at the same time every day). The copper IUD seems like an alright fit, does anyone have experience with it?
I know one of the side effect is heavier bleeding & cramping, but I’m pretty sure I can deal with that.

Although the copper IUD is non-hormonal... It definitely has some effect on hormones. The copper disrupts the estrogen/progesterone balance, which could be a similar problem with the Mirena. And vice versa... the estrogen/progesterone imbalance has an effect on the copper/zinc ratio.

IUD causes Pulmonary Hypertension
by #133119 14 y
Hi There,
I had a copper IUD, to avoid the hormones. After 2 years I developed severe shortness of breath. The doctor’s had no answer but called it Pulmonary Hypertension(PH)...However, I found the research from 1985 that PH is caused by excess Copper in the blood! This can be caused by hormones, diet pills, or a copper IUD! Had the IUD removed and am slowly recovering my stamina. Apparently the excess copper causes Angiogenesis (run-amock blood vessels) in the lungs and elsewhere, which explains why I had developed fibroids which I never had before! So I went searching for apopto ...

IUD-related yeast problems
by shawna 19 y
For the past five years, I have had a copper IUD (intra-uterine device) which I suspect may be perpetuating my candida issues. I was doing some digging to try to figure out why my candida keeps coming back, and found a connection between copper IUDs and candida.
The doctors in the article mentioned that the copper in the IUD leaks into the uterus, causing a weakness in the adrenals and the immune system. They said that this leads to candida/yeast issues in some IUD wearers.
Any thoughts on this?

I had the copper IUD inserted in late 2004. I had alot of discharge due to it and sometimes after intercourse the discharge would smell funny, needless to say I did not care for that. After a 1 1/2 yrs. I became pregnant with the copper IUD in place. I had to have it removed and then had to have a D&C. I was looking into the mirena now but very leary because I got pregnant with the copper one. Maybe the copper might work for you but I don’t think it agreed with me with the discharge and then the pregnancy, good luck.

actually, from what i have heard about the copper IUD is that it doesnt cause nearly as many problems because it has no hormones, one of my friends have it and I talked to her yesterday and she said she hasnt had problems but its because its hormone free but in the case of the Mirena, because your body wasnt made with all of those hormones at such strong levels, your body goes into shock and tries to get rid of the contraption itself, almost think of it as having a child, once your baby is grown, the body expells it because it isnt suppose to be there anymore. I had the copper IUD for about a year and a half and had it removed in order to get mirena, and the removal process for me was painful. Granted, not AS painful as insertion of an IUD, but not a walk in the park. My copper IUD had settled low (in my cervical canal) and my body was trying to expel it (why I was cramping ALL the time) but was unable to because the arms of the T had gotten a little imbedded in the lining of my cervix. So when my doc pulled in the strings to remove it, a little bit of tissue came with it. She said that normally I wouldn’t have felt a thing though. Hope you ...

Hi,
I had a Mirena inserted a little over 6 months ago after having a copper IUD removed. I was pretty happy w/ the copper IUD (except for the heavy bleeding) but the Dr. insisted that the Mirena was better. Since I have noticed occasional joint pain in the hips, sensitive breasts and unwanted facial hair--more than previously. I am 45 & probably in perimenopause, so these symptoms could be b/c of that BUT I do find it curious that I never had these joint pains before.
Did you ever get some answers to your question? I am curious and thinking of having mine removed.

I do understand how you feel about not wanting to give up on it due to the cost. But in the end, that the cost of getting rid of it is well worth it.
I had the copper IUD for years with no hormonal problems (I did have some cramping in the first few months). Overall, I really loved my copper IUD. It was the best birth control I ever used. I would recommend it again.

I went to a Planned Parenthood website where they had different methods of contraception explained in full from abstinence to sterilization.
The least harmful, to me, seemed to be the copper IUD’s since they do not release hormones.
Does anyone have an opinion on this. Maybe some stories, or knowledge of how frequently they actually might slip out or break through the uterus?

I had the copper IUD and developed candida. But I just wanted to mention that there is typically a cause for candida that must be addressed in addition to treating the candida itself. Stress/chronic infection/suppressed immune system may all be the culprit. However one of the most common causes is heavy metals (mercury, copper, etc). Just treating the candida with prescription or natural therapies will not cure it - the underlying cause must also be addressed.

Increased menstrual bleeding, often with pain, is the most common problem of IUD use and the most common medical reason for removing IUDs. In clinical trials about 4% to 15% of women stop using IUDs for this reason within a year after insertion. Percentages are usually higher for the Lippes Loops and other unmedicated devices than for copper IUDs.
Older women and women with children generally have lower rates of removal due to bleeding and pain (332, 463). The kind of counseling and support women receive and their attitudes toward using IUDs also influence rates of discontinuation due to ...

candida toxins slow the methylation cycle down and also having copper overload also screws the methylation cycle so your basically not getting enough feel good neurotransmitters and taurine itself is a neurotransmitter made through the methyl-cycle that your possibly not getting enough of.
