The main black berry plants I have are about 10 year old doyal plants....a black berry primarily used by amish, yet the man doyal certainly was not amish. I looked him up and he did live to be 101 and seemed to have quite a bit of college education, etc....so the berries did him well.
With the amish, I am not sure who they buy them from, but they have to say they won't reproduce the berry plants, and are told they won't reproduce the same anyway, which is all abit crazy, because they reproduce just like any berry plant does and even the doyal website says they keep on reproducing basically forever as new shootes come up each year and they live 2 years, so they are constantly reproducing them selves.
So internet wise, I have found 2 farming founders that lived past 100, the barly queen and now the black berry man.
The doyal black berries are thornless and can grow huge in size, Doyal claimed you would need 10 normal plants to equal 1 Doyal plant.......
Locally the LOWES (WALMART SISTER) sales black berry plants and each year when they have left overs and reduce them way down, I pick them up and they also grow huge plants, but just as Doyal wrote, they do not produce worth crap, you are lucky to get 10 berries per plant, while the Doyal Plants appear to have 1,000 berries and just keep coming and coming, I have picked for almost a month and still the plants are red with more berries to come.
Doyal got into selling ferilizers, etc. to make his claims that the Doyal plnts could produce 20 pounds of berries and claims on their website that if ou do not have such ferilizers, you are likely to just get a few quarts or gallon, etc...........reminds me of Dr. Cass Imgram / dr. Clark, that once you make $$$$$$$$$$, you come up with more gimmicks to make more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Naturally these plants could never produce 20 pounds if you pruned them as all the modern day vine producers claim you must do or you will fail..back when Doyal was alive and writing, I didn't notice anything about pruning, even though those selling the plants today, have the amish convinced you must prune or fail.
The Doyal berries are not sweet unless you let them get very ripe, black berries in general are like this, which makes most people ignore black berries and want the huge variety of man manipulated raspberries.....problem being, since the raspberries are sweeter, teh coons, the bugs, the birds, etc. will eat them before you can.
How they can permantly make a plant loose its thorns is amazing and how they make fruits sweeter is equally amazng.
I have 3 runs of black berries about 200 feet long and you can still walk between the plants as they have not filled in totaly yet, I am hopeing within 2-3 more years, they will reproduce new plants to the point you have to walk around and not find a hole to crawl through the rows...
The plants on the top of the hill are the ones producing the berries, while the 1/2 on the side of the hill have produce very little, so I plan on tiling the rows allowing the water to run away as they say the plants like water, but hate setting in water and it seems that way in nature, the best berry plants are on little high spots. The side of my hill is actually "wetter" and at the bottom where water can collect, the plants look like crap and don't produce nothing...so in theory, once tiled, once irrigated, once all the rows filled in, I think a person could get 20 pounds per plant.
So berries / grapes, the vine fruits are in deed, true human foods....I have goose berry bushes that basically have never produced anything worth eating yet and they have so many little thorns, etc. that I don't know if they would ever be of any value, but if they do produce 1 day, I am sure they have a differant varity of minerals because of their color is differant...
IN GENERAL the darker the color, the better the natural potassium minerals, so mixing in some wild elder berries would make for a supreme mixture.....keeping in mind, Dr. Christopher believed cancers were vert little more than too much salt and not enough potassium in the body.
The so called super foods are not a bad idea, but this garbage of buying your super food in a powder, a capsule or having vegetables in it or even worse, vitamins, truly is a huge mistake and just a bunch of nonsense to trick people into buying such trash.
YES, the barly queen consumed her barly and barly certainly is a vegetable/grass ak, annual and wrong type of minerals and just think how much better / longer a person would live if they consumed their fruits, what God created the human to live by.
