- Fasting Safety Questions
Ok, background info:
I eat a diet comprised of wild caught small fish, organic fruits and vegetables, extra virgin olive oil and a small amount of cashews. I am allergic to eggs, beans, grains, other nuts, seeds, chicken, pork, potatoes and shellfish. I used to have a very long list of ailments, but, at this point, I am dealing with menstrual migraines (which have only recently returned), low body temperature & decreased cold tolerance which tend to go hand in hand with hypoglycemia (I was type II diabetic, but I got my blood sugar down to normal ranges for over a year, then it started to dip dangerously low, down to 42 at the lowest).
I was 300lb, lost to 233 over 2 1/2 years, gained back to 250-259 range, currently 257. This recent gain was from hypoglycemia preventing me from doing the intense exercise my body requires to lose weight. Calorie restriction doesn't do it; I can eat 500-800 calories per day (really) and gain weight.
I am 5'10", extra large frame (according to many doctors). I would not want to weigh less than 155lb or have a body fat percentage less than 15% at the lowest.
Here is the issue: I am broke. I have recently lost my job & am starting to work from home, but it will take a while to increase my income. I have only enough money to feed my son, leaving me nibbles which, so far, have amounted to 250 to 800 calories each day. Unfortunately, because of what is probably a thyroid issue, I am gaining weight on this tiny fare. Also, my blood sugar keeps dropping.
I have noticed that, when I don't eat, my blood sugar maintains beautifully at 70-83.
I used the body weight simulator and calculated that I could last 137 days with one hour of medium intensity cycling per day on zero calories. This should give me enough time to build my business, after which point I could start eating again.
I have fasted before, with my longest being over a month on water and herbal tea. I usually feel just fine, but I am 33 now (last time I was 27) and feeling my mortality a bit. I want to do everything I can to ensure my safety.
I plan to break my fast with some green smoothies for a few days, maybe a week, then I will slowly add in fruit, veggies, etc. When I first eat anything dense, I will take enzymes.
I would appreciate any advice on staying safe during this long fast. What is the general consensus on liquid multi-vitamins and herbs during fasting? Amount of water needed... should I salt my water a la Water Cure ? I have a few pounds of kelp powder, some spirulina and chlorella... should I take these at all during any phase of my fast?
I plan to monitor my blood sugar & use a little honey to raise it if it dips below 60, which, I hope, it shouldn't if I am not eating. I have urinalysis testing strips.
I have a scale which measures body fat percentage, so I will break my fast if my body fat percentage goes too low.
Thank you in advance!
