I would like to inquire whether or not colonics provide the benefits that are advertised. Before continuing on, please note that this post is out of one of frustration.
I have had 2 coloinic sessions at a place (found on this site) here in Houston. From what I can see, a closed system in place. I have had 2 of them (at $75 per session) but have not seen much. Most definitely not what others have raved about in their colonic sessions. I do not know if I am impacted. If so, can I be so impacted that 2 sessions produce next to nothing - except gas? What can one reasonably expext during these sessions? They have sold me pills (for $60: Restore Probiotic, Nu-Zymes Food Enzyme Supplement). As far as I can tell provide no benefit whatsoever. The Experience, Clear and Harmony set produced better results - at least I went to the bathroom.
I don't live in Houston and must travel to get here. The colonics places I saw in San Antonio had open systems - which (according to my understanding ) are not beneficial. I work in a remote location where access to colonics (for me) would be difficult.
I asked the threapist (BEFORE travelling a long way) what I could do to make this a fruitful session. I was told to drink a lot of water - which I did.
When asking her (today) what would it take to remove the impactions, she said 12 or more sessions - even after that, I supposedly would not be well.
I am frustrated to the point of tears!!!! I have had swelling in my feet that was supposedly attributed to a liver not functioning properly. I cannot cleans the liver until I cleanse the bowel. I feel I need help and can't seem to get it. Unfortunately, I have put all of my hopes in this procedure - to the point of spending a good amount of time and money to just be here to get it. The only thing this place seems to be trying to do is make me spend all my time and money - providing very little in return. They are trying to schedule me for colonic sessions virtually every day next week as well as from now through to Saturday. They seem to want you to pay for sessions in advance. As mentioned earlier, I am scheduled for one tomorrow - if I had not paid in advance, I probably would not go.
Do colonics *really* work? Is it possible to be so impacted that their benefit is practically none? I don't eat mounds of junk food (I don't go to McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King, etc. for meals). I practiaclly eat fish and vegetables mostly and also stick with chicken. I may get beef once every 3 months in the form of speghetti or small hamburger. I have not had a "juicy steak" in 15 years. The only things I may be guilty of eating on a regular basis (that I have just recently found are not good for you): yogurt, croissant, fries, Baley's coffee, whip cream, sugar... But I stay away from fried foods - fried chicken, fried fish, etc.
Given a description of my diet above, why is it that the sessions are not working for me? I am starting to loose faith in this procedure now - are there any drugs that are recommended to loosen up impactions? What kind of doctor can one see to obtain them? I don't care too much about side effects at this time - I just want something that *works*.
Any type of help would be appreciated.

This is a reply to # 625,620I am no expert on this, as I get colonics only occasionally. However I always do feel a little cleaner and lighter afterwards. I can also watch and see what gets washed out, and there is definitely stuff coming out. I mainly do colonics after a liver flush.
I have never been asked to pay in advance, would rather find myself another place. But don't know what the common practice is in Houston.
I don't think colonics are the end all and be all of colon health, just a peace of the puzzle. It cleanses the last five feet of the intestine (colon), a very important part, but our intestines are many many feet long. Therefore a lot of cleansing has to happen from the top down. I prefer to spend my money on bowel cleanses, juice fasts etc.

This is a reply to # 625,620Give it a good trial week with about 5 sessions to get your bowel cleared. If you are seriously impacted one or two will not be enough. colonics are not the answer but they are a good start.
At the same time you want to give up any refined flour, bread, cakes and those croissants. These stick like plaster to the colon. Also dairy products produce mucus so you have a good recipe for glue in your system.
Take probiotics. You need the good bacteria for digestion and good bowel movements.
You need lots of fibre. Take a teaspoon of Psyllium daily in a glass of water, followed by another glass of water. The Psyllium is good for constipation or diahreah. Drink at least a litre of water every day.
You also need the good oils for lubrication. Olive, flax etc., Udo's choice is a very good oil mixture with the Omega 3 and 6. Take a tablespoon at least, every day.
Exercise daily. You have to move your body physically to get rid of stagnation and get the system moving. Massage your stomach also, in a clockwise direction.

This is a reply to # 625,620Sorry I'm not an expert, but why not to take colemas at home and save time money and energies, not to talk of the advantage of being you the one that decides what, when and how long etcetera?
In the book of Bernard Jensen : Tissue Cleansing through Bowel Management, there is a very detailed description of how to build boards and do colemas (you can find this book also on-line somewhere, sorry I can't be more precise) and also what protocol to use. He tends to use far too many supplements for my taste and my wallet, but the very necessary things are bentonite, psyllium and probiotics after, as far as I understood.
Another source, less detailed: Daniel Reid, The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity. He suggests to use Greenlife after the researches of dr. Irons (a pioneer in the bowel cleansing) that you can find on the net at www.awerenessinstitute.com, together with other very good products.
Also veru interesting the two books of Richard Anderson, who also sometimes writes on this forum and sells on the net everything you need.
By the way Anderson stresses very much the emotive component of the 'guts' problems and I don't see very well you taking vacation from work and travelling hours to Houston and spending flows of money and then taking your colonics 'the most relaxed you can'!!! come on, no wonder you doubt it works!
(Anyway there are tons of other good books on the subject, you can find some titles on www.sheilas.com)
You don't feel like getting colemas or enemas? Use herbs! Like Holistic Horizons after dr.Gray or many many others you find in the net. Make a Master Cleanser fasting adding B&P and salty water flush (that by the way is a very ancient indian practice called shankprakshalana)... you have a world of possibilities just waiting for you to take care of yourself just the way you like.
And whisper to your body words of love, it seems the usual banality but really it makes a great great difference! Breath deeply, calm down from your worries and smile to your dear suffering body, tell it everything is going to be OK, with time and dedication but without effort and sacrifice.

i never had a colonic, but instead bought a colema board (not as good as a colonic). i am happy that i did it, so i can use it before and after my liver cleanses. i bought a folding one, because of storage. but based on your colonic prices i will have earned it back in 2 1/2 times and if you buy a non-folding one, it will cost you less than 2 colonics.

Thank you for your repsonses. At first, I thought this post had been removed from the forum and had created a not-so-nice post because of it. I hope that I can remove it.
I am here in Texas visiting my mother. I normally work in a remote location. I found the reference for the colonics clinic on this site (in Houston). Since the other place in San Antonio used open systems, I chose to go to Houston for a closed-system colonic.
I don't know what to do now ...
Previously, I had one BM once every 8 days (I did not know this was unusual until this year - I am 37 years old). I had started to go once per day but that has stopped. Because of the laxatives, my stools have been runny.
I want so badly to be healthy... Right now, my family is kinda poking fun at me because the colonics didn't work. They said that the operator was a "quack" and one sibling said I was so "gun-ho" to have a "cattle prod" shoved up my - well, you know the rest... She, too, is in the medical profession and said that the colonics would not work because if it was like dumping water on hard mud. That this doesn't get to the core of it. You may just get the outside... That a stool softener (over the counter) would have solved the problem.
On Friday, I drank prune juice and Aloe Vera juice and was bloated tight as a drum. My mother (seeing my condition) called frantically to locate a good doctor. She found one on a Friday. On that day, I went to a Gastrointestinologist (sp?) for help (after 3 unsuccessful colonics) - BTW, the colonics were really $105 each - she charged $70 for the water and then another $30 for the probiotics. The doctor frowned on colonics all together.
I am scheduled for a colonic examination on Wednesday to check the status of it. She gave me some medicine to take for the constipation. She put her finger up my rectum to see if there was any blockage - there was none - but - during the colonic, the operator could not get the water inside. Something seemed to be stuck in the rectum area?
I really don't know - I wish I knew what the problem was. I would not mind paying if I *knew* that it could work ...
I could not do a suppository (sp?) because the rectum was too sore from the colonics - it burned.
I didn't want to go to a doctor, but - I was so frustrated with this process. Because of the doctor, she said that I needed to have 2 more weeks off. So, I will send this letter to my employer and take medical leave.
I have been reading this book "Colon Health" from Norman Walker. This book stresses the use of colonics. I was wondering why the sessions were not working for me and had come to a conclusion that perhaps colonics were only for people with well-functioning systems. Not for those who needed help.
I am a little concerned about what the tests will yield.
I will e-mail you, oldiebutgoodie for the reference. If anyone knows of a good therapist in San Antonio, I would appreciate it - although - I doubt I will let my family know should I decide to go ...

This is a reply to # 625,661Yes however you do not want to drink anything with in 2 hours of your apt. If you bladder is full you can not except as much water during you treatment. Its helpful to often breath as if you trying to make your belly a balloon. Everytime I do that I amazed at what comes out. I am totally laxative dependant and have had 3 session and Im sold. Drink lots of water but cut it off at least two hours before. Try to cut down your salts and chew your food down as much as possible. I seen the results of my fast eating and half of my issue is I dont chew my food down enough to pass. Also I have heard some people dont see results for up to 5 sessions. Good luck

I'm sorry you're having such a frustrating time. You don't mention how many bowel movements you usually experience each day so my situation may not be similar to yours but I'll share my limited experience with colonic irrigation.
I, too, wanted to start Liver Cleansing and needed to make sure my bowel was clean first. I had three sessions in three weeks with nothing much more than gas as a result of my time and money. My therapist said she couldn't feel any peristalsis and I got almost no material to release. I've been taking ground flax seed for bulk for the past three years along with trying to clean up my diet of refined foods so I usually have 2-3 bowel movements a day. I asked on this forum if the colonics were doing me any good and the response was that my colon was functioning just fine. So... I decided to go ahead and do my first liver cleanse and I got modest results with no discomfort. My colonic afterward, however, was quite a bit different than the previous three. I had good peristalsis during the session got quite a bit of material. I'll be doing another liver cleanse this weekend with a colonic scheduled for Monday so I can't yet tell if it was just a coincidence or if it's going to be a more permanent change.
