The silica will look like a brown mud when it settles out. So as long as the water does not have a musky taste you are alright. The musky taste will only occur from microbial growth IF you somehow also got organic matter in there. I had this happen once when I was adding lemon juice to my water to help increase the formation of orthosilicic acid.
I usually change out my silica about every 6 months.
This is very interesting! You just buy silica by bulk? Or what?
I do, but I buy everything in "bulk" because I make herbal formulations. So I go through a lot of silica since I use it in several formulations. For an individual though a little will go a long way. A spoonful in a gallon of water can last years, although I usually replace what is left ever 6 months. So if you bought an ounce that would last you a very long time.
Haven't heard that much about silica but this peaked my interest.
What does it do for you? You mentioned digestion. How is it affecting your digestion?
It is not for improving digestion. Sufficient stomach acid is required for its absorption. Stomach acid helps to convert silica in to its absorbable and functional form orthosilicic acid. As we lose stomach acidity with age our silica levels decline due to the decreased conversion of silica in to orthosilicic acid. This leads to problems including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, diverticulitis, arteriosclerosis, aneurysms, wrinkles, etc. The only way it would really help with digestion is through its strengthening effects on the nerves.
What other benefits is there ?
Here is my write up on silica benefits:
The silica from diatomaceous earth provides numerous benefits. Most of these benefits come from its role in collagen and elastin formation. Collagen is a protein that gives tissues strength, while elastin gives tissues elasticity. This is why it helps with wrinkles and strengthening the nails. By increasing collagen it gives these tissues strength, and the elastin restores the elasticity that is lost in the skin leading to wrinkles. It also helps with varicose veins and aneurysms for the same reason. Varicose veins and aneurysms result from a loss of collagen and elastin in the veins and arteries causing these blood vessels to balloon out. Along the same line silica helps to prevent arteriosclerosis by both strengthening arteries to prevent damage, and because of silica's anti-inflammatory properties. Emphysema results from a loss of elastin in the alveoli, and so is also helped by silica supplementation. It is the absolute most important nutrient for bone strength. Silica not only aids with calcium absorption, but it is also essential for the collagen matrix that gives the bones the majority of their strength. In addition the piezoelectric effect of silica is what allows mineralization of the collagen matrix. In other words, without sufficient silica all of the calcium, magnesium, phosphorus..... will not do anything for the bones. Silica can help prevent visual problems from aging due to loss of flexibility of the lens of the eye. It is great for tendonitis and other similar problems due to the strengthening and anti-inflammatory properties of silica. Silica also links together glucosamine molecules to form chondroitin molecules for the production of cartilage. these are a few of the beneficial properties of silica.
As for absorption, silica does not absorb as silica but rather as orthosilicic acid. This is produced by the reaction of water on silica, though the presence of acid increases this conversion. The reason for many of our aging problems such as osteoarthritis, emphysema, diverticulitis, wrinkles, etc. are from declining silica levels in our tissues. This is a direct result of declining stomach acid levels, which decreases the conversion of silica (silicon dioxide) in to its absorbable and usable form orthosilicic acid. This is another good reason to avoid antacids, acid blockers, and alkaline waters and drinks such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
The absorption of silica is very poor so I found the best way to take it is by adding it to water to begin with. I put a large spoonful in a gallon of water and let it settle out. Once it settles out you cannot taste it. The water will dissolve a tiny amount of the silica to form the orthosilicic acid. The more pure the water is to begin with the more it will dissolve. This actually solves a few problems. First of all it reduces the solvency of purified waters (distilled and reverse osmosis) so they will not be as aggressive and rob your body of nutrients. This also helps to prevent purified waters from becoming as acidic from the carbon dioxide it will absorb from the air to form carbonic acid. Purified waters are notorious for this problem. Finally, the silica will help to strengthen tissues throughout the body and reduce inflammation. By adding it to a large volume of water you will also get more in to your system as opposed to supplements. If you take a capsule of silica the vast majority will never be absorbed and will just pass through your system. When added to water and drunk throughout the day you will absorb a little each time you drink your water. So in the long run you will end up with more silica entering the bloodstream for use by the body.
You could always use bamboo. It is 7 times higher in silica than horsetail grass. And unlike horsetail grass, which contains nicotine and constricts blood vessels, bamboo dilates blood vessels.
And best of all it is recommended by 4 out of 5 pandas
WOWZA, I didn't even KNOW bamboo could be ingested by people!! Where in the world could we purchase all this stuff? I haven't heard of a LOT of the things you recommend! I mean, HORSETAIL GRASS? Phew!
I betcha it's recommended by FIVE out of five pandas! HAHA
I buy bamboo powder from a Chinese herb supplier. They are a wholesaler though and do not sell to the general public. So the best bet would be to check online.
Yes, DE is pretty much silica. It is the skeletal remains of diatoms, a type of phytoplankton. Unpurified DE is roughly 80% silica, 10% metal oxides (calcium, magnesium, aluminum). When purified the metal oxides are removed leaving behind pure silica with a little moisture.
Excess silica will just pass through the system. It is sometimes used to deworm animals this way. They feed the DE to the animals and it shreds the worms in the intestines as it passes through.
I am not surprised the looks you got giving out jars of this white powder. You should have added tiny spoons or a mirror and razor blades with them as a joke.
That is interesting about the Morgellon's. Thanks for sharing.
I use DE for many things, esp. with pets. I WANT to take it myself internally, but I can't get past the ideas that it's shards of shells ... how come it doesn't shred or tear the gut?
I don't want to take it and find out 10 years down the road that my guts are shredding beyond repair!
DE is an extremely fine abrasive. It is really no different than fiber, which gets its stiffness from silica. Also keep in mind that the gut creates a thin protective mucous layer. So consuming DE is not going to hurt the gut in any way. If you are still worried just allow it to saturate the water like I use it. That way all you are consuming is liquid orthosilicic acid rather than solid silica.
It was probably just eczema, not psoriasis. Eczema is partially an allergic reaction and partially liver toxicity. Psoriasis is a chemical imbalance between cAMP and cGMP. I think I already posted my write up on psoriasis. If not I will try to find and post it.
Silica can help with eczema by increasing collagen in the skin. This gives it more strength, which decreases the risk of skin damage that can contribute to eczema.
Excema or psoriasis , this has been the question all my life, I have been diagnosed as having one or the other by various doctors since before I can remember. I had other symptoms of it being psoriasis, such as ridging and bubbling in my fingernails, joint pain and swelling, abdominal bloating and digestive problems, and dry eye problems, all of which are considered symptoms of psoriasis, but in my research can also be symptoms of other problems as well, all of which, for me, doesn't matter anymore because I get none of the symptoms since starting to heal myself naturally using good organic produce and supplements.
spud
Eczema will be red and flatter. Psoriasis is thicker and patchy. There are a lot of extra cells produced from the unbalanced cGMP. The extra cells cells flake off and generally have a more silvery appearance.
Yes, that sounds more like psoriasis. And you are right, topical steroids will not do squat for it. Psoriasis of the skin is a problem of cell proliferation, not inflammation.
I was making a wrinkle cream a few years back and I would add silica to it to help with restoration of collagen and elastin.
A simple thing you can do it to take a diluted acid solution such as citric acid and add the silica to it. Shake them up so the silica has a good chance to react with the acid then let it settle out over night. Pour the solution in to a sprayer and spritz the skin after getting out of the shower and drying off. The skin is supposed to be slightly acidic. Soap and hard water make the skin too alkaline, which damages the skin. So spritzing the skin with the solution will help to restore the natural acidic pH of the skin. The citric acid will also increase the conversion of the silica in to orthosilicic acid, which is the form of silica the body uses.
If you want to make it more astringent add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide.
