The idea with leaky gut is that once substances start to leak through your intestines that shouldn't, your body recognizes them as a threat even if they aren't and starts to produce antibodies as if they were allergies (in which case this is generally all allergies are). However the longer it goes like this the more your body is going to recognize these allergens sooner by being used to the fact that it's an "allergy", hence eating gluten is automatic for it.
Once these antigens leaking through cause antibodies an immune response is inevitable. Other systems become effected including the liver which starts to overwork itself and symptoms appear such as migraines, brain fog, fatigue, arthritus, memory loss, and a whole host of other problems.
It's even argueable if candida is the same way. People tend to think that just because they've had blood tests done that show candida antibodies being produced this means they have an overgrowth. I do not believe even the slightest bit that this is the case. Rather that it's the same thing as the allergies - There's ALWAYS candida in your gut regardless of overgrowth or not, if it's always there and always leaking (if you have leaky gut), it's going to cause antibodies which show up in these tests. However these antibodies will not always show up, especially if you've been taking antifungals. The only time people really have overgrowths is when it actually shows itself, ie thrush and yeast infections.
When it comes to candida and leaky gut, if you have a candida overgrowth you definately have leaky gut. Yet if you have leaky gut it doesn't necessarily mean that you have an overgrowth. This is the problem with a lot of people attempting to get better as they're following the proper diet but they're also injesting all sorts of supplements and herbs and antagonists and anti-fungals that inflame and irritate the leaky gut more and more, thus they never get better thinking they still have an overgrowth. Even those that did and got rid of it, still have to cure leaky gut.
Leaky gut is just as easily if not more easily caused and continued by poor eating habits, bad diet, lack of exercize, spices, and lots of types of medication (conventional OR homeopathic depending on what it is).
So here's a new one for ya - diet and nothing else. Don't take anything with it and see if you get better. But only do this if you aren't 100% sure you have a candida overgrowth. Also please do yourself a favor and don't ever eat gluten or even dairy for that matter if you have a tolerance until your SURE your healed. "Testing" to see if your still allergic to it will just make you worse, especially after weeks of eating properly. Cut out anything thats questionable from your diet or healing leaky gut, period.
Best way to go is nothing but RAW fruits and veggies, and when I say that I mean it, meaning no spices AT ALL, no herbs, no teas, no vitamins, no cleansers.
Sea Salt and olive oil are fine if your not reactive to them and try to make everything organic. Cut out garlic and onions as well, yet more things said to be good for the candida diet that can also add inflammation and irritation to the gut. Keep everything simple.
And watch your eating habits - eat fruit only on an EMPTY stomach, preferably in the morning or just before meals (salads). Chew your food to a liquid and avoid stress when eating (better yet avoid it period). Also exercize daily by WALKING not jogging for at the very least 5-10 minutes. Do this at a slow and steady pace without stopping preferably. And think positive, even if you feel like crap.
Believe it or not a diet with lots of fruit and veggies in it is actually good for candida as well. Certain fruits and veggies contain "fructooligosaccharhydes" which are also known as prebiotics that feed friendly bacteria and help them growth enough to balance your intestinal flora. How's that for reassurance?
