The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant couples.

From Library Journal
The Searses, popular childcare experts and authors (e.g., Parenting the Fussy Baby and High-Need Child, LJ 8/96), have teamed up with obstetrician Holt to give us this work. Using a month-by-month format with nice illustrations that show normal fetal development, they discuss a wide range of pregnancy options without judgmental bias. Scattered throughout are helpful hints and stories from other pregnant mothers that give the book a comfortable feel. Unfortunately, adequate information on possible problems is missing from the text itself, though the preface does note that rare conditions are covered in an appendix (not available for review). A nice supplement to Arlene Eisenberg and Heidi Merkoff's What To Expect When You're Expecting (Workman, 1995. rev. ed.) and The Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby's First Year (LJ 1/95). Excellent resource!, November 3, 1999

The Pregnancy Book is an excellent resource for anyone who is expecting - whether you're pregnant for the first time or the third time. The book walks you through each month of the pregnancy and describes what mom and baby should look like and feel like. Throughout the text, the actual thoughts and feelings of expectant moms appear in italics. I found these comments to be very comforting since many of them were similar to what I was feeling myself. At the end of each chapter, there are questions and answers. Again, I found myself relating to many of the questions that were asked. While providing a great deal of factual information, The Pregnancy Book also comes across as very personal and caring. It is a great companion book to We're Pregnant! which focuses on a real life couple as they experience life as expectant parents. The two books together give a true picture of what a woman goes through during a pregnancy. I found it reassuring to know I was in good company when it came to my thoughts, feelings and concerns.

Great Book if You're High Risk and Counting the Days, January 22, 2004
Reviewer: A reader from SEATTLE, Washington USA
Currently pregnant, this is my second round with this book.
This pregnancy was determined to be high risk from day one. What I like best about this book its organization. Unlike any other in my huge stack of PG books, this book breaks down its chapters to cover separate months of the pregnancy. This is very helpful to me in that it gives me a sense of accomplishment with every new chapter. It also helps me to focus on what's happening right now in my body, which is particularily great on days when having to comprehend the whole picture is overwhelming.
Since I've had to severely limit my activity early on, information on exercise, sex, and travel aren't much use to me, but I like that the authors delve into many of the more subtle symptoms and issues of pregnany.

I recommend ALL Sears books. He is positive, and very balanced. Most pregnancy books are directed towards a medical route, but, Sears always give you both a holistic perspective as well as medical. As an example, I had a home birth and my cousins all had hospital births and this book supports both and gives you information regarding both. He has 8 children, his wife is a nurse. All of their books are wonderful!
