happenstance on a frigid snowpacked night creates a splendid morning walk opportunity the next day

What luck! I got another chance to do lots of walking, unexpectedly, during my workweek.

There was a deep-unplowed-snow-on-the-road-blowing-snow-low-visibility issue on Wednesday night and although I left for my night job 2 hours before the time I'm required to be there, a car traveling in another lane on the road slipped, swerved around, and hit me practically head-on. The driver spoke little English, and when I asked if he had insurance he didn't really answer, but I pretty much assumed he did not.

I called the local police on my cell phone and they said they were on "accident alert" and if noone was hurt to exchange insurance information and contact information and come by the police station in the morning to give them the information about the accident for a police report.

My car didn't sustain any damage thanks to its "bionic" fenders but his car was slightly damaged.

He acted like he didn't understand when I again asked him for his insurance info. I asked for his contact info and he said he didn't have a phone #. I wrote down his license # but noticed his license was expired.

I decided to drive home after that rather than to work, because I was upset, and shaking like a leaf. Really.

When I got home to my own safe driveway, I called my supervisor's cell phone. She was rather insensitive, stating that I should get back on the aforementioned snowing-snowpacked road in the same low visibility conditions, and drive to work which is 30 miles away from my house on the highway route.

I explained to her as best I could that I was scared, still rather in shock, and needed to either take a bus or a cab to work.

It was still an hour before the time I was to be at work, so there was an outside chance of being on time.

Because of the weather, the cab took an hour to pick me up, and an hour to get to my worksite, thus I was an hour late. And the cab ride cost 63 dollars, which made it scarcely worth it to even go in. It would have been nice if my supervisor had just allowed me to stay at home. But that was not an option she offered.

So I worked all night, and in the morning I got to experience several nice little walks in the frigid weather. I didn't have my pedometer with me, but I counted the blocks. Mostly long city blocks.

Since the $63 cab bill pretty much tapped me out until next paycheck, I opted to take the bus home. I have a neighborhood eco-pass so riding the bus costs me nothing, it's just that the various buses often don't run as late as the time I go into work at night, which is why I had to take a cab in.

My supervisor drove me from my worksite to the nearest regional bus station, and the bus took me to the town where I live. Then I got to walk. And walk. And walk. Sunny and frigid...the weather.

26 blocks total walking. Part of the trip from where the regional bus left me off downtown I took another bus that runs up and down one of our main streets, but mostly I walked. I was nice and tired by the time I got home. Sleep was such a relief.

I still very much want to get back into walking regularly and when I am determined to do something I find a way to do it.

I feel so good when I walk. Or do any form of exercise, for that matter.

Well, I wish you a great weekend, and thanks for listening!

P.S. Yes, I did go in later Thursday and report the accident. There's nothing much anyone can do to follow up, but at least I did the right thing.
