MLK Jr. Day Walk by vibr8 .....

Monday January 16

For the holiday I took a different kind of walk. A march! First there was a rally with many speakers, in front of the County Courthouse, mostly high school and middle school students reciting poems and speeches. Many different drummers drummed at the edges of the various interconnected events.

Each time I attend these yearly events I learn more about Dr. King. I find myself wishing he had lived longer. He accomplished so much in his lifetime-cut-short.
So many others have dedicated themselves to carrying on his work. I appreciate so much what they are accomplishing.

So we listened to speeches and drumming for an hour and fifteen minutes, and then walked from downtown to a local high school. It was a chilly little walk. The (most welcome) snow flurries had stopped, but the coldness remained. People were friendly and talkative. I enjoyed that. When we got to the high school, we walked down a long hallway into a ground-level cafeteria, where there were giant cakes (yellow cake and chocolate cake) for Martin Luther King's birthday! There was also lots of free pizza, burritos, wraps, egg rolls, and artesian bottled water.

Another set of drummers was drumming consistently in the cafeteria as people ate.

I met two city council members and one of the city council members' children. They were interesting to talk to.

I wasn't hungry, and decided to proceed back up the long hallway to the main lobby, to visit the array of booths that were being set up there. Talked to a labor organizer, the city housing department, and the peace and justice people, and got a nice laminated MLK Jr. bookmark and a pretty purple pen.

Then I returned to walking as it wasn't morning anymore and it had been my goal to do these walks in the morning!

I did the last mile of my walk in the neighborhood between the high school and downtown. The sun appeared as clouds moved eastward. Warmth...

Met a few stray cats and a dog. Noticed that one of our local p 0 r n shops has changed it's name, apparently taken over by a national p 0 r n chain. Less than one block from the high school. I wondered why.

Lots of new stores on one of the side streets, including an imported and domestic cheese store. Cheese isn't helpful when one is trying to do more exercise, and also choosing to eat in a way that boosts one's energy and encourages weight loss. But I do so love cheese. Isn't that the way it goes?

I tried to get my mind back to thoughts of Dr. King, and what he did for so many people in this world. A selfless kind man.

And a lovely focus for my daily walk.

Three hours later (due to the stopping and listening to speeches, and drumming, and such) I returned home.
