Susan & Alex Love Their Jobs

Want to love what you do? Then do what you love. And in that case, you couldn't find a better pair of role models than my friends Alejandro and Susan Muñoz.

We had dinner at the Muñozes' on Friday. Alex cooked for four.

I suppose "Alex made a five-course meal for four worthy of three stars from the Michelin Guide" would be a long shot more accurate. (You can see the whole menu here - the "Proscuitto San Daniele with whole wheat bruschetta" was sublime!).

Now, Alex had been CFO at a unit of Aon; Susan, a consultant at Boston Consulting Group. All in all, a pretty typical path for a pair of Harvard MBAs.

But Alex loved food; Susan, art. They found themselves hanging out at Mario Batali's Babbo every Tuesday night, and spending more time in art galleries than on client presentations.

And they both did something that wasn't so typical of an MBA:

They quit.

He: to wait tables and pursue his love for wine and cuisine.

She: to teach yoga while painting the canvases from early in the morning to late at night.

And you know what, Readers?

It paid a lot less, but it rewarded a lot more.

And we can learn plenty from that. Because the short-term comprises we make for money don't pay off in the long run. In love or money.

And funny enough, their "risky" move turned out to be no so risky at all.

Susan's booming business, ArtWorks, LLC, provides affordable art for corporate clients, ranging from stock exchanges to law firms.

And Alex has found himself working for Mario Batali's growing empire: he recently helped open Bistro du Vent in the East 40s here in Manhattan.

Now most of you, I know, aren't looking to make a radical break like jumping from risk insurance to fine cuisine. Which should make your finding your next great role in life even easier.

If Susan and Alex could jump off the gravy train to find their love, can't I ask you to follow your dreams this week, to walk yourself just a little bit further along the path?

My colleague, Kate, suggested this favorite Amelia Earhart quote as an appropriate endpiece for this week's newsletter: "Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace."

And that's just exactly right, Readers. Have the courage this week to find your art, your Bistro, your peace of mind in doing what you love.
