This poem is part of my Legacy Writing.
I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home in a multi-cultural neighborhood called Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.

In the last few days, I have been watching some Christmas Time Movies, such as "The Santa Clause," and "Miracle on 34th Street." It reminds me that when I was a child, I believed in Santa Clause, irregardless of being Jewish.

We lived in a home where although my father was devout in his faith, we were dependent on others from other faiths to help us. In those days, we had a Catholic family who would send one of the youngsters in, my best friend, to turn off the lights after services. We could not do that ourselves by the laws of the Shabbath.

I recall being taken by my mom to an enormous Santa Clause display downtown. They stores really went out for displays in those days of my childhood.

I know I sat on Santa's Lap.

I also have fond memories of good feelings at times when I was at the hospital and gifts were being given out.

We also went to big celebrations in our neighborhood where gifts were handed out to all the kids. My parents must have taken me there.

I am always looking for the best qualities in every faith spirituality. Faith is a universal quality. We need to believe in something, and I do believe and celebrate devotion, regardless of the origins. I am always looking for the good.

This is a poem I wrote from the Temple Gardens Convalescent Rest Home in Salt Lake City, Utah while taking physical therapy after hip replacements in the Winter of 1975.

Sending this along to everyone looking for a Rekindling of Faith today.

This is a time when we need each other, and our commonalities.

Christmas at the Resthome!

The halls are caroled out with bands of traveling songsters si thick they walk sideways.

In the basement, I watch a rotating colored film shine through a brisk blue, green, and yellow light on a shredded tinsel foil tree--when they plug it in.

The inmates say, "Like Hell, U;m going to the program. I'm all Christmases out!
Try and get me from this bed!"
In therapy twice a day, they made them stand up from wheelchairs despite themselves and tie the tough cases to tables cranked vertical while they scream.

Outside my door, old Aroyas strapped to a rail with bedsheets, and every two hours like clockwork, unzips himself, raises his leg, and sprays the floor with more water than ever went in.
I'd rather have a dog.

Connie breaks the dawn with,
"Mama! Muriel! Lena!" names she remembers from her ancient past,
and blinding Openshaw stretches her call through the day in a prolonged "Nur err see! Someone needs you!

Carpenter sits fully dressed in bed with his sun visor on and heaves his cry:
"Nurse! Help! Nurse! Help! Nurse! Help!"
as he once called cows.

Me, I thought I'd resist it all too, until on a Saturday night Santa came and looked me in the eye and left a candy cane.
Somehow, I haven't been the same since and have to smile inside
'cause it's Christmas! It's Christmas!"
