Apart from keeping your skin healthy and eliminating the toxic substances from your body, sweating also helps to cool your body. During strenuous work or physical exercise, both of which are considered to be normal conditions, the body of a human should sweat almost 0.8 to 1.4 litres every hour. Without sweat, we would most probably die before too long, and so it is an important bodily function. However, when does sweating too much become a problem instead of being a help?

This article hopes to shed some light on exactly what is hyperhidrosis? It is a disorder experienced by people who sweat excessively. It is estimated that about 3 percent of individuals suffer from too much sweating, although there is no conclusive evidence for this in Australia to date.

How Many Forms of Excessive Sweating Exist?

People experiencing excessive sweating typically suffer from two types of hyperhidrosis. The first is too much sweat on the soles of the feet or the palms, a condition known as Palmoplantar Hyperhidrosis, while the second one is excessive sweating from the armpits which is called Axillary Hyperhidrosis.

It is a common disorder that causes lack of self-esteem and unhappiness in many people. Many young people around averagely age 13 generally experience sweating of the feet soles while underarm sweating is experienced mostly by older adolescents. If the condition is not treated by a professional doctor, it might persist far into adulthood. Although it causes no pain, the degree of the embarrassment it brings to the sufferer is often hard to endure. Often, too much sweat can stain or discolour clothes, cause professional or social distractions, and even strain a love relationship where one partner doesn’t understand.

What Are the Causes of Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis affects many individuals who are in perfectly good health; however, sometimes it can be due to various systemic diseases or infectious neurologic or endocrine diseases. Those severely affected do sweat most of the time regardless of hot or chilly weather or their mood, but it is commonly triggered by emotions like nervousness or embarrassment, and heat.

In extreme cases, individuals suffering from hyperhidrosis experience severe complications that practically affect their daily life such as fear of shaking hands, difficulties of properly gripping the steering wheel or inability to hold pencils and ink pens steadily. An attempt by such individuals to play some types of sport that require firm handgrip is laughable.

Treatment for Hyperhidrosis

Steps towards treating the condition can be made accurately once a systematic examination and evaluation of the causes that trigger it has been made. It is not hard to get a good result for the disorder and achieve a better quality of life. Many people may find some solution once they have discovered the following information:

  1. You can try using antiperspirants doled over the counter. Start by those that contain small doses of metal salt. However, in the absence of antiperspirants that are bought in the stores, there are some dry salt antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride which is quite useful

  2. Other strong antiperspirants that have aluminum chloride hexahydrate can also be prescribed to you.

  3. Ionized tap water applying electricity can be passed through the skin by a device known as Iontophoresis

  4. Sweating can be reduced by taking oral medication prescribed by a doctor

  5. Underarm or axillary sweating can be controlled by noninvasive surgical procedures such as Botox

  6. Sweat glands can be permanently killed by a technique employing microwave energy.

  7. As a last resort, you can use a surgical procedure known as thoracic sympathectomy

All or some of the suggested methods can help you to reduce excessive sweating.
