Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty, lipectomy, liposculpture, or lipo. This is a cosmetic procedure that disintegrates and sucks fat from a body. Lipoplasty is commonly used on the buttocks, thighs, abdomen, chin, neck, calves, back, and arms. During a lipoplasty, fat is removed via a hollow instrument known as a cannula. The cannula will be inserted under the patient's skin and a high-pressure vacuum will be applied to the instrument.

What Are the Main Objectives of a Lipo?

Patients who go through a lipoplasty are usually interested in removing undesirable fat deposits in specific areas of their body. Contrary to what many believe, lipo patients have a stable body weight and do not seek out this procedure to treat obesity or lose weight.

Furthermore, lipoplasty does not get rid of stretch marks, dimples, or cellulite. The aim of the procedure is to change the contour of the body.

Does Lipo Produce Permanent Changes?

After a lipoplasty, one's body shape is not necessarily permanent. If the patient gains weight after the procedure, their body figure will be a bigger version of their new body shape. However, the fat cells that are removed during a lipo don't grow back. But it is worth noting that after a lipo, the body changes that come with age will still occur.

If a patient gains weight after a liposuction, the results of the procedure will be less dramatic. Experts recommend that a patient should weigh less after the procedure by an amount equivalent to the amount of removed fat. For example, if a person weighs 150 pounds before a lipectomy, where the procedure removes 4 pounds of fat, the patient should maintain a weight that is at or under 146 pounds. However, if the patient gains 8 pounds after a lipo, the cosmetic results will not be optimal but the patient will still look more pleasant than if they had not gone through the procedure.

Does Lipo Get Rid of Fat Permanently?

Lipoplasty gets rid of fat cells permanently. This means the fat cells removed during a lipectomy do not come back. However, not all fat cells are removed. Therefore, you can gain weight in the part that underwent a lipo but in a more proportional manner. If the lipo was conducted on your thighs, you may gain weight there but this time the weight will be evenly distributed in your body as opposed to fat concentrated on one area. In essence, weight gain after a lipo results in proportional weight gain.

It's difficult not to accumulate fat in the body after a lipoplasty. According to Dr Rudolph, a renowned scientist, the life span of fat cells is seven years. In this case, fat cells are continually being formed. This may be the reason why it is difficult for people to go below a standard weight no matter how hard they try.

When a person gains weight tremendously, large numbers of fat cells or lipocytes form from connective tissue cells through a process known as differentiation. This connective tissue turns into immature fat cells before developing to mature fat cells when one becomes obese.

Summing it Up

Lipoplasty is a cosmetic procedure mainly performed to contour the body according to the patient's wishes. Unlike what many people believe, liposuction is not a weight reduction procedure. While the procedure can result in permanent fat removal, one is still likely to accumulate new fat or gain weight at the treated site. Therefore, after a liposuction, patients are advised to observe a healthy lifestyle, eat a balanced diet free from excess calories or fats, and to exercise.
