It appears that most people do not know what compost is let alone why it is an essential component in soil-building and therefore considered as "the most important job on the organic farm".

I've been composting since 1977 when I moved from Chicago onto an organic farm. It has become an integral lifestyle for me!

I've been actively aspiring toward making Biodynamic composting since taking over the compost management of an 8 to 9 member household in 2008. Now I'd like to live on or next to a small organic cow dairy and include the manure in my composting. I'd also like to harness the energy and fuel that can be produced in the compost piles!

When I think of how people can be better informed on the importance of composting one thought I have is that food markets (especially Farmers Markets) could educate people (I don't expect government schools to).

About twelve years ago I introduced a couple charter schools to vermi-composting. I have no idea what the school children may have "taken home" from their experience of the worm box that was made for one of the classes. I think I could follow up with one of the former students who just graduated from college. I'd ask: Are you composting now?

I'd like to conduct a survey of natural foods restaurants and ask whether they have their food scraps composted.
