Earth Day is a Vote and a Test

Earth Day is today, April 22. It is not obvious that it is Earth Day, most of us would not be aware of it except for the "Happy Earth Day" greetings on the news and on the sides of public transit.

It means something that Earth Day is not a big deal - in a way, we have voted "with our feet" and the results are in:
* Earth Day got 5% of the votes,
* Normal Busy Day got 75%
* Keep The Weekend Going got 20%

Walter Cronkite announces it - "So their we are folks, we have Earth Day losing out once again to the NDs and the KGs by a significant margin".

The reason that Earth Day gets so little attention is that for the entire human history up until now, "earth" was something we could "take for granted" - it is big and strong and it isn't going anywhere. There was no need to protect Earth, it sustained us and often it attacked us too.

But the Age of Technology has changed that - humans have the technological powers to overpower the naturally occuring features of this planet.

Our Mother, our Source and Sustenance, the Planet with the Perfect Conditions for Life, THIS PLANET EARTH is not able to keep up the supply of Forests, Fresh Water, Ocean Health, Clean Air and Ice at the Poles.

I guess one way to look at it is that "Earth is not good enough for us anymore" - but don't say it too loudly because if Earth hears that, we might have to move.... and we don't have anywhere else to go.

So, WE HAVE VOTED NO. We don't really like Earth very much, and we reject Earth as being worthy of a special day in it's honor.

Personally, I don't agree with that opinion of Earth - to me, Earth is the most precious thing ever.... but I seem to allways be at odds with society.

Okaythen, so PART TWO - maybe today, "Earth Day" was NOT an election, maybe it is a TEST??

We failed.

What does that mean? If the idea of "parallel universe" is wrong, then this might be it - Earth might be the only place we can call home. We have powerfull telescopes and although there must surely be another place with the perfect conditions for life amongst the 100 Billion Planets in Habitable Zones, WE HAVE YET TO SEE ONE, and we have had 1000s of people looking for the past few decades. Even if we did see one that is like Earth, it will be a LONG long way away, and we just don't have that technology yet - we have the technology to trash THIS Earth, but not the technology to travel 100 light years in a reasonalble time.

Maybe Earth is the only place we can call home. If we use the analogy of "Earth is a House", then it is the ONLY house we have... but we have been pooping on the carpets and there are tampons and syringes plugging up the sewer line, the roof is rotting and might be leaking now, and I think someone jammed the thermostat - I turned it down but I can hear that the furnace is still running and it is getting too warm in here now.

So, ya, if Earth Day is a TEST, we failed.
