Natural Heath Products - Got Milk? by Karlin .....

MILK should be restricted from making health claims, especially if other functional foods are.

In Canada there has been a big controversy about the Natural Health Products regulations [Bill C-51 and 52], where there were fears about vitamins and "functional foods" [garlic, etc] being regulated to the point where we could no longer get them or use them.

What about the health claims the advertise so regularly on TV about MILK?

If "health foods" get stomped on by Government regulations - no doubt as a favour to the pharmaceutical industry - then the one good thing that could come out of it, to my way of thinking, is that MILK would have to stopped being touted as a healthy dietary choice.

I cringe when I see those [misleading] ads about MILK being "forever" and that we "need them" throughout our life. That is just LIES, especially when we consider the FACT that at least 50% of adults are lactose intolerant, maybe everyone over 50 yrs. old is lactose intolerant, and the ads don't make any mention of that. Many teens and children are also lactose intolerant - everybody with a genetic history from northern latitudes is considered at risk for lactose intolerance.

PLUS, the horemones [BGH is still used in the USA] and antibiotics that are used in dairy cows in such huge quantities, and are found in the milk from those cows, cannot be a healthy choice.

Maybe ORGANIC milk would be okay for people who are not lactose intolerant because it doesn't have the horemones and antibiotics in it, but the milk marketers organisations are not promoting organic milk, or lactose-free milk, or milk with lactaid/lactaise in it [the gut bacteria that digests lactose].

So lets wait and see if the "No Milk" protest groups will manage to get milk lumped in with the "functional foods" restrictions. I doubt it, since lobby groups are telling the government how to regulate the marketplace.
