Day 1 of a holiday fast by BeTheChange .....

As I was looking at the calendar in my kitchen yesterday, I realized that there are so many reasons to give our bodies a break in respects to the others around the globe that are not privelaged with such a choice. Additionally, there is much going on with the natural world that dictates fasting--for instance, a full moon and the winter solstice happening in the same weekend! Therefore, starting right now, I am embarking on a 5 day fast, straight through Christmas, with regards to the Unfortunate AND Mother Nature.

I have always been completely deterred by the many overindulgences that occur during December and January, always justified by reasons such as "I have to get it all in before the New Year!" and "It's Christmas! Why the hell not???" etc etc. Year in and year out, and many are sick and cannot understand why. I want to see this change, so I am going to try and BE that change.

Today was the first official day of winter! What a time to celebrate! Deer grow antlers, snow starts to fall, I refrain from food to make sure that my body is in touch with all of these natural changes going on around us (especially living in a large city, I believe that observances such as these are necessary). Tomorrow night is a full moon! Emotional and physical energies are high everywhere, and we have to be careful with our bodies and digestive systems.

In a couple of days, there will be families around the country feasting on countless animals in "the spirit of Christmas". Sickening. We cannot feed life with death. I choose to feed life with life this holiday season and refuse to take part in consumption at all, so that I may continue this connection with nature and intense observation of all of Her wonderful seasonal changes.

After Christmas day, we see all of the trash on the sidewalks and curbs that has collected as a result of selfishness and overconsumption...wouldn't it be grand if we did not create any waste at all???

I have never done a fast this long before. I will only be consuming water and tea and occasionally coffee (I work at a coffeeshop). I look forward to keeping this blog as a sense of affirmation to myself and perhaps to gain a few supporters. This will be difficult and take lots of willpower, but I think that I am capable and would love some agreeing encouragement along the way. Perhaps if you understand my reasoning for this fast, and would like to take part, but have understandable seasonal obligations such as family dinners and such, then maybe you can consider making a charitable donation or simply not eating one meal in respects to these reasons. It is the thought that counts.

I hope to close this fast at the end of the week, on Friday or Saturday Dec 28/29, and hope that I do not give in to the temptation of "the season". This will be the ultimate test of willpower.
