Chanting, “Imus must go and Rosenberg too,” dozens of protesters, led by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, marched in front of the Chicago offices of NBC here on Monday.

“These people are making money off of bigotry, so we must remove the profits earned from that bigotry,” said Rev. Jackson during the one-hour rally on the sidewalk outside the NBC Tower at 454 North Columbus Drive. “We must take the profits out of denigration.”

The protest initiated what Rev. Jackson said could be a long battle to pressure NBC, CBS (owner of WFAN-660AM, Imus’s New York City home station) and sponsors to remove Imus, sports announcer Sid Rosenberg and executive producer Bernard McGuirk from the airwaves. Imus and McGuirk most recently ignited controversy on March 16, when McGuirk called Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) a “bitch” and said Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has a “Jew-hating name.” The nationally syndicated “Imus in the Morning” radio show is simulcast on MSNBC.

“Choose dignity or choose Imus,” Rev. Jackson said. “There is an unlimited flow of bigotry on many of these radio shows. People across lines of color should not tolerate this.”

“This is not a slip of the lip, this is a pattern,” he said. “This was a conversation.”

Joined by dozens of supporters, including Illinois State Rep. Mary Flowers (D-31st), members of the National Organization for Women and religious leaders during the noontime rally, Rev. Jackson told marchers it would be the first of many protests.

On April 4, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team as “hard-core hos” and “nappy-headed hos,” and producer Bernard McGuirk called the NCAA match-up between Rutgers and Tennessee “The Jigaboos vs. the Wannabees.”

At Monday’s rally, Rev. Jackson said midday protests will continue daily at NBC stations in major markets across the nation until Imus is taken off the air. The NAACP, members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Urban League are expected to join future protests. Jackson said the groups also plan to meet with network and advertising executives until they reach a resolution about Imus, as well as the conspicuous absence of African Americans and Latinos on top news and talk shows.

“All day, all night, all white, does not represent the diversity of American culture,” Rev. Jackson said. “This is about a point of view. Put forth a black or Latino host. We deserve the right to share our point of view.”

Imus apologized April 6 for the comments made on his show, but Rev. Jackson said Imus, NBC, CBS and the show’s sponsors need to take further steps to ensure the bigotry will not continue.

“We should accept his apology and resignation,” Rev. Jackson said.

Rep. Flowers said she joined the march to fight for what is right. “What really gets me is the disrespect that allows this constant denigration of black women,” Rep. Flowers said. “What they should have been talking about on that show were all the struggles of black mothers getting their daughters to that school in the first place.”
